Trees in the mist..

stephen_ellaway

This beautiful beech wood was near the North-East coast of England and every so often the 'sea frets'; a thin luminous sea mist, would roll in and create this eerie and mysterious light.Native beechwoods are becoming very rare in England and, as I hope this image reveals, that is a great shame.I made the photo. on Agfa pan 50 b&w film (down rated to 25 a.s.a. ) on a medium format camera for 1 sec. @ f 22, and 'pulled' the development one stop to allow for the high contrast of the scene.Thank you so much for your comments...I'm a bit overwhelmed!

Fantastic image, Steven. I think you have well succeeded in making us understand that the loss of such beech forests is a heartbreaking shame.

Excellent tones, composition, and exposure control. Beautiful form and effects. Good details. An admirable purpose.

I'd wish you the best, but looks like you don't need it. Keep up the good work.

Sincerely,

Having awarded Edie O'Brien's B&W capture 7/7 earlier this week; I have to say that for many reasons (subtle) - I personally believe this image to be superior.

I would like to see the bottom cropped up a little. But I particularly like the Etherial look and the unique textures of the (as you said) now vanishing Beech trees.

It's really beautifull shot.

p.s. Sorry Steve, for delay....but I had to learn first a little bit of English to answer you. My cats photo isn't manipolated but it's only a lamp. You good understand the message of surreal situation that I wanted to give at my photo. I'm happy with your comment...thanks. Best wishes Felice

I am looking at this image and my eye is drawn down the path and to the light source. The trees to the right have a fantasy quality about them that makes this scene magical. Not so much spooky (IMHO) as it is a dreamy, thoughtful place. Thanks for sharing this amazing image.

This shot is even more impressive when you consider that this camera has neither light meter nor interchangeable lenses.

This photograph is outstanding in its composition, tonal range and use of light. A wonderful B&W image. Regards, Doug.

everything works in this image: great tone range, nice multi-plane compostition. even the hot spots are not too hot and not too cold-just right. did you use any PS manipulation (duatone?)
