I wonder if it will look even better if the dark area at the bottom of the image was cropped out more......

I think this is a great shot as is. I don't agree with cropping as tight as a.n. suggests. If you were to crop I would maybe try cropping a little off all four sides. I think the idea is to frame your subject which is the three figures and the sunset and if you crop too tight you lose that. But this whole cropping thing is nitpicking. It's a great shot as is.
