Im new to the SLR world this is literally one of my first pictures ive taken with the D90 i purchased few days ago. I took a picture of this hummingbird he was fighting in my front yard and zoomed up close got him perched on this cactus. I sharpened the image slightly but for the most part its as is from the camera.

Marvellous colours....and it's great to see what I call 'environmental bird portraits' showing a bit of the bird AND it's habitat rather than a close up of a bird with a completely DOF'ed-out background that is so much in vogue. Having said that I think I might have performed a tighter crop around the bird in this particular image.

Best wishes for the New Year!

Good grief, either those are some huge prickly pears or that is one tiny little bird!

This bird is so tiny that it seems to get lost in all the cactus. A tighter crop would help to make it more of the focus of the image.

thanx for the advice as i said im by no means a professional was on of my first pictures ever on a slr. I was debating a tighter crop but then figured the appeal is the bird and its vivid colors but i also wanted to show how small it was and give a sense of his size with the surrounding. I find it that there size is just as incredible as there vivid colors.
