Making the hard soft and round -- wonderful contrast in concepts. The subtle palette is exquisite. Every time I look at an image that is as inspirational as this one is, I wonder was it just good luck to be in the right place at the right time, or the result of creative vision and many visits to the location. Years ago I had the good fortune to accompany Ansel Adams for about a month. Every day we would go into the field to a place Ansel was thinking of photographing. We would look around, wait, talk, wait some more... I would have been snapping pictures of the place every time. After an hour or two, Ansel would say "I guess the light isn't going to be right today." And we would leave without even getting out the camera. In that entire month of going out every day, I think Ansel exposed one sheet of film.

Beautiful photograph.  And thank you to John Ellingson for sharing the story and the insights into Ansel Adams' work.  We, as a community of photographers don't share these stories near enough although we share photos more often...and it is nice to hear a story that gives us a glimpse into how one of the world's best photographers worked.

What joy your work has brought me.  In these times of HDR and hyperfocus, it is so very lovely and refreshing to see a real work - one of art that expresses vision, mood and mystery.  Thank you for sharing it.
