Thanks for commenting Marc!BTW, this one was shot in full color, but as strange as it may seem, it came out the way you see it. (I haven't touched anything at all in it, except for a bit of unsharp mask)

BTW, cograts for the POW! :-)

So very interesting. A visual treat in its larger view. So much to look at, but not too busy to distract. I spent a great deal of time studying this photograph, and examining the individuals and groupings of individuals you captured in this sweeping diagonal composition.

Interesting tidbits:

1- (upper 1/3, center) the grouping of five people is an interesting focal point. Although I get the feeling it is only a group of four traveling together. The fifth person, on the right appears to be moving in his own direction, although his shadow makes him look like a part of the group. Interesting how well isolated this group is from the rest of the people.

2- (upper 1/3, left) The wheels of the bikes in a bike rack create a myriad of coils and shapes.

3- (lower 1/3, center) The tall man who appears to be having a conversation with another person stands out amongst the people who are mostly on the move.

4- (bottom, center) The bicyclist who has found a gap in the crowd in which to traverse a way across the street. Great shadow as well.

5- (center, right) The people and the cart. The cart seems so intrusive the way it seems to block the heavily crowded roadway. I imagine something is being sold, and its positioning has captured the attention of at least one passerby. Maybe its just a newstand.

I also wonder about the mysterious people hidden in the shadows along the right side. How many of them are there. We just get a slight glimpse of some of them.

Was loss of color due to small aperture/high speed due to bright sun reflection?

Love this photo! Reminds me of a river with people flowing up the picture and a soft bank on the right.

Very nice. To me this photo illustrates that it is strong composition, not the minimalist elimination of detail, that makes for a successful photograph.

Rick, many thanks for commenting, and taking the time to analyse the picture in depth. :-)

Regarding 5, I'm attaching a 1:1 crop from the original image which explains the purpose of the stand. :) (2 for 10GBP - they were selling Nokia GSM accessories in there :)

Cheers, and thanks again!

Hi Todd, yes, I believe the loss of color was due to the intense brightness of the scene. The street was washed out by a short rain a few minutes ago, and the morning sun was filtered by very dark clouds. The moment I pointed my camera to shoot the scene, it was already almost monochrome even to the eye... :-)

I don't know how did you get that huge black mass of a shadow triangle in the right upper part of this photo but I do know I do not like it at all. It does not look as a natural rendition of light and shadow there so, perhaps, whatever was done there it might be undone. Otherwise, absolutely terrific.

Maria, I'm afraid the triangle of shadow is very natural and unintended. :) Simply the sun was lighting the street from above, and couldn't reach the right side of buildings. (or the left side if that matters)

So, not much I can do to have it "undone"... (personally, I think the whole thing about this photo is the combination of highlights and shadow, and especially the upper right corner is playing a very important role, but maybe it's just me :-)

Hello Raluca! Yes, your guess is correct, I'm also from Romania. :)

However, I wasn't aware of the "Street of the church", nor of its author. (I'm more familiar to the new/young generation of photographers from Romania, especially those who seem to crawl around the Fotomagazin list.)

Anyway, thanks for sharing the link, and indeed, I must agree the two photos are remarkably similar, although unrelated. (mine's been shot in Oxford, BTW) Anyway, personally, I like Ioan's composition more than my own - very elegant shape and narrow angle. :-)

I too thought this looked familiar. It reminds me of works I've seen from turn of the century New York. Great work.

An interesting slice of life. There seems to be so much going on, that you could look at this shot for awhile and discover little dramas and dynamics going on in odd corners. I like this very much.

An outstanding photograph of a busy thouroughfare. It has come out with a perfect ageless look.

Could be one of the best shots in this site were it not for that big (too big, IMO) black shadow in the upper left side
