After dancing for 6 years, I?ve finally put together my answer.

Contra is connectedness.

Fancy moves are wonderful, I know one or two myself, but they are simply window dressing.

As a lead, I make the decisions, but with the understanding that the quality of my leading is directly measured by the quality of the experience for the follow. If I detect that what I?m doing isn?t working for her, I change it. After a lot of time together, she learns which of her signals prompt me to make changes, and she gets better at sending them. As she gets better at sending them, I get better at receiving them. At first this process is mostly unconscious, but after a lifetime or two or three, it unfolds completely into awareness, and the distinction between lead and follow blurs, fades, and eventually vanishes altogether, leaving only,
