katzpjs 50 Posted September 25, 2009 Interesting. The old posts had a real purpose when they were new and may have even held sighs. They appear to be having a new purpose now because of their even spacing on the dock, but that purpose escapes me. Link to comment
dankapsner 0 Posted September 25, 2009 The first thing I thought of was "boots." Now, I know that concrete and boots may evoke an odd bit of criminal history ("...the cement's just for the weight, dears...") but that was not what I had in mind. For some reason these suggest real boots--the leather kind--and for me there is a sense of whimsey. I also like the light and the tonal play. Link to comment
Emmanuel Enyinwa 0 Posted September 25, 2009 I was just reading some Civil War history, and all I could think of when I view this image is the infamous "Pickett's Charge". That would be Pickett with the red head about to lead these clueless mob into slaughter. It was Stephen Crane who wrote in The Red Badge of Courage that these poor folks knew how to die, but did not know how to shoot. Good find. Link to comment
mark_q 0 Posted September 26, 2009 It was quite a shock as I entered your page and saw the thumbnails... How come I managed to misplace one of my photos into so totally wrong folder... what would Jack say now?! Poor joke aside. I feel very comfortable looking at this delicious scene in the very familiar gentle illumination of soft daylight. As many times earlier I have wonderd whenever the softnes is caused by the pollution in the air there yuo are, or just a result of your magical treatments, Jack. The most striking detail on this marvellous photo is the post with the reddish shield: that top acts as sorta negative to the vague spotlight illuminating the base section. Then we have those detalis up on left and right balancing this gang shot. The horizontal profiles with those four slots like links of invisible connection chain are details I know to apreciate. Somehow the overall presentation quality makes me think of your PS book project for a time ago. Did you shot any good book and been reading and training new tricks to master PhotoShop, Jack? Is it just a fantasy in play or do I see some edge burning along left and right edges here? Needles to sum up, I love this photo. Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted September 26, 2009 close ups to the hidden "beauty" of this "Oasis"... as if one is not enough to understand.... you always bring a smile to my face looking at your work and titles!. Link to comment
Todd Kowalski 2 Posted September 27, 2009 Jack, this is very good. The sign and posts look like sentries in front of what is a treasure laden (good camouflage) warehouse. I like the black framing as well for it's ability to make the image really pop out. Looks like another favorite, Your images are getting to a good number in that folder of mine. Take Care, Todd Link to comment
0 Posted September 27, 2009 I guess water won´t do any good.... Except the picture is good anyway! Ilike the steril style. Link to comment
bosshogg 4 Posted September 27, 2009 If one could boil the essence out of urban sterility, and make an image of it, I think it might be this. It's beautiful! Link to comment
samcisa 0 Posted September 28, 2009 Looks to me like four performers on street stage under beautiful natural lighting. Composition and processing are super strong like always.. Link to comment
Jack McRitchie 150 Posted September 29, 2009 My apologies for being so late in acknowledging your kind comments. I was a bit surprised at the reaction to this picture. I often find ordering thoughts in my head for a reply a lot more work than taking the picture in the first place. I'm a wordyguy, no doubt, but sometimes I get a bit verbally constipated and this is one of those times. Shawn - there is, of course, some method to this post madness. Like all the cones in this cramped city, these posts serve to mark territory and keep vehicles from parking willy-nilly. (which they seem to do nonetheless.) Alex - Thanks for dropping by. I appreciate the visit. Dan - As we all have learned by now, you're kind of an odd duck. It's your most endearing quality I think. Poles with boots; cows with guns. Emmanuel - I'm surprised at the assosciations this image has set off, from cement footware to The Civil War to performers on a street stage to "sentries in fromt of a treasure laden warehouse." I guess that's the thing about images, they have the power to send our minds spiraling off in unforseen directions. Drew - !!!! right back at you. Markku - It's always a treat to have a visit from the resident mathematician/magician. The care you take with your pictures has influenced me more than you know. I didn't so much borrow your image here as your borders. Pnina - I'd rather make people laugh than to impress than with my artistry (there's little danger of that anyway). Todd - Glad to hear you like this one. I've been having trouble pleasing myself recently but I guess that's how it goes sometimes. Bengt. I walk around the block all the time taking pictures of the same things. They're always different. David - I don't know about sterility here; it doesn't look all that clean. I guess when you pack so many people so tightly together, the result is a certain numb mindlessness. Samir - Thanks a lot. I quoted you above. Nice imagination. Link to comment
mark_q 0 Posted September 30, 2009 I'm honored by your words. I should have been clearer, it was the framing I thought while writing the opening line, my poor joke. Link to comment
