This is fantastic action shot!!! Not only right place and right time, but right work!

Crystal clear, unbelievable composition - ripped wheel still in the frame (!!!), face expression is here (great DOF), good colors (can be little improved imo, but it's not important here). This is a 1M$ shot!!! 7+/7+

I shoot photos at a local race track and can't seem to get into the digital imaging yet. I see with a good camera and a little planning and luck that it is possible.

...Understand the sport - and be ready.

Pro equipment certainly helps. A lot of "consumer" cameras don't have the focal length for motorsport, there is often an awkward delay on the shutter and you might struggle if you want a burst of shots.

Can somebody please tell me why action photography is not rated

anywhere nearly as highly on this site as other forms, eg,

portraiture, landscapes etc. Can people not realise that

photographers have at best - very little, and very often -

absolutely no control over the scene they face in front of them?

Very few events take place at the water's edge, at the foot of a

mountain, at sunset, and I've never seen a semi naked twenty

something with small breasts, and a p***ed off expression on her

face, driving a racing car. Maybe if could incorperate all of the

above features in a motorsport pic, I'd get a bit better than

average reviews. Or maybe I am an average motorsport photographer?

Can people not respect the subject of action pics, and am I wrong in

thinking that many on this site think that, if photography is not

portrayed as fine art, it should not be viewed as worthy

photography? I have been deliberately blunt in order to "inspire" a

response from you. I think your comments will be interesting, not

only to myself, but to many motorsport and action photographers on

this site. I look forward to reading them.

I am not a sports photographer, but I can understand the difficulty - You don't plan a photo like this, you just have to be ready. Great capture. IMHO, to be a more "sellable" try to saturate the colors a bit more i.e. a bit more vivid. Of course, I could be wrong. Dave

I just love the expression of the audience to the right of the car. It's just a shame they weren't slightly sharper. You have a good portfolio here. It has inspired me to go to my local Grimley racetrack with my camera. I gave up riding bikes as they were bad for my health and promised mum that I would only take photos of them instead but just never got around to it. Time to start I think.

Gary - I agree totally with your argument regarding action photography. As a motorsports freelancer, I know what you mean.

Anyways, this is a great shot of the "expensive repair bill" moment - love it, you've nailed it. I like the fact that the errant wheel is in the bottom left corner of the frame as it makes the eye move around the shot, taking it all in.
