The essence of the man is very definitely conveyed. His gaze is elsewhere, unhindered from the camera man - and I like that. His features are full of character and are strong too. Had the dof been extended, this might be one of the great shots of the decade, and in demand for the next generation of 'candid portrait' books. That's assuming it was candid. Where detail is present, the tones and texture are fabulous. Quite realistic and gritty (always impressive in a B&W). I do feel as a viewer, quite close in distance. Nice catchlights too.

I would like his other eye to be more in focus. Then again, maybe that is part of the reason I like this photo. I definitely like the detail.

What a face, a photographers dream, well captured. Yes, more DOF would have helped, but it's not enough of an issue to detract from a supurb portrait.

I love this portrait. Maybe you should crop it a little (left side of the frame), but it is excellent work. DOF isn't a problem here.

DOF is perfect, the sense of volume created by his great skin and beard texture; his sight at the infinite...it's a deep sensation. the film choosing is also unbeatable!

the metallic detail on his coat maybe distracts a bit.

This is emotionally a very strong photo.

Great framing and composition. Superb exposure!

Depth of field very minor negative.

Thanks for sharing, and consider these comments helpful or rubbish as you see fit.

I think is a very good photo, one of those I dream to take one day. But do you think that this is possible with an Olympus OM 1n and Agfapan film? Anyway congratulations!

I really appreciate the opinions. I have always been involved on an internal debate as to whether or not the dof is too shallow on this frame.

Virgil, you could have acheived a very similar image with the agfapan. The light was very low, but of high quality, so agfa 400 would have been necessary,, and it would have given a little different grain and tonal charactersics. Your lens may have made a diiference, but the image could have strong similarities. This image was taken last april in San Francisco at about 4:00 pm I think. The catcchlights are from the bounce of a fairly light, large building. I only had a few minutes to capture images, and there was a fair amount of confusion and energy all around me.

I have a pretty good interaction with those living on the streets, even though I don't see them often, as my visits to the city are infrequent. To answer a question, I do compensate my subjects for their time, and the images are as close to candid as I can make the situation. I have to shoot fast and with energy.

Thinking about your photos and answer I realize that my previous question was triggered by pure frustration. Checking photo web sites every day to see beautiful photos, all taken with very expensive cameras, lenses, films etc, can make you ill after a while! Sooner or later your ego perfidly whispers in you ear 'maybe you could also take photos of this quality if you had that high quality gear..' I also know that 'It's not the arrow but the Indian!'

So, sorry if it was a bit too much of a reaction from me. The fact is that your photos are just great.

Very nice. I love the quality of the dark tones. Wish there was enough depth of field for the subject's left side of beard and left eye
