Andrew,

First, yes, I want to see his feet. I’m also bit stumped as to what that post is in the lower right foreground, and would like to see all of it as well. It might also be nice to see what it is that he’s looking at.

I’m not sure what you mean by “blown.” The exposure seems spot-on to me. There’s a bit of lost detail in his shirt, but there’s also lost detail in his hair. While I’d (of course) like to see that detail, I don’t find either lack disturbing. It’s an extremely high-contrast scene and you found the happy medium.

You don’t indicate what equipment you were using. If film, you may need a different stock to capture such a dynamic range. If digital, and if you shot RAW, you still may be able to salvage the details either with judicious use of the sliders in Adobe Camera Raw or by creating multiple TIFFs with different exposure settings and compositing them. Again, if RAW, you may be able to use different BW conversion settings for different parts of the image, as well. For that matter, if you shot film, there’re all sorts of old-school darkroom techniques I’m sure some master could use, as well.

Of course, if it were a staged shoot, you could (theoretically) control the lighting to your heart’s content. Reflectors and / or fill flash would do the job.

But, aside from all that, I think it’s essentially a good capture. Aside from a relatively minor composition complaint, pretty much everything else works for me.

Cheers,

b&

Thanks Ben

It was a quick unplanned capture on the street shot in raw, so thanks for your in-depth critique and tips.

it great to learn :D

Hi - I saw your picture in the critique forum. I like how most of the details in your picture are gone excepting the pants. It makes the pants stand out a lot and I believe that this makes it very useful for fashion photography. I can see these pants being sold in magazines because of this picture. Very good black and white capture despite you did not get exactly what you were looking for.

I like it a lot, the title on the photo is great, he is a 'Geezer' alright, a real 'Top Johnnie'!! The Dof is good making the 'Geezer' really stand out against the background. The Bollard to the right of the geezer could be cloned out but then again is that not what one would expect to see in a street shot? Exposure I think is spot on, a stop faster and you may have caught more detail in the shirt but probably would have lost the contrast, it might have been too flat. Great Street Shot.

Regards Tony.
