setsail728 15 Posted August 1, 2009 The crew of this 23 foot Sonar sailboat was handling the spinnaker sail during a small race on Oyster Bay as I blundered into the middle of the race. I liked the photo better digitally altered than the raw photo. Thanks for looking! Link to comment
wood 1 Posted August 1, 2009 I'm not sure what digital alterations you performed, but they seem to be minor. If so, I would not classify this in the "Digital Alterations" category. Many of us do some post capture processing and unless it significantly alters the original content of the photo, we don't classify it as digitally altered. As to the photo, My first impression is that it is too centered and does not provide enough context for the viewer to maintain interest. Since the boat is pointing to the right, my personal preference is to have given more space on that side for the viewer's eye to see where the boat is heading. Space on the other side may work as well as the boat seems to be coming about. Link to comment
setsail728 15 Posted August 1, 2009 Robert, Thanks for your comments. Frankly, I didn't know which forum to place the photo in. You are correct in observing that the alterations were minimal and perhaps another forum, which one I still don't know, would have been more appropriate. I am a sailor and I was interested in the crew handling the spinnaker. Hence the title of the photo. I wasn't concerned about where the boat might be going etc, as we usually are in a photograph of a boat. So again, I agree with you that under normal circumstances the boat should be placed elsewhere in the frame with more water in front. I think I fell victim to my own narrow focus, i.e. the crew work, and I let that dictate my development of the final photo. Okay for me but certainly not okay for the non sailor. Again, thanks for taking the time to make your remarks. Warren Link to comment
elportebonheur 0 Posted August 1, 2009 Independend of your nice pp work - I wonder if the were sufficient wind to pull up the spi..:) - looks all quite relaxed... Regards, El Link to comment
setsail728 15 Posted August 1, 2009 El....the spinnaker is particularly useful in what we sailors call "light air". Means very light wind. If my memory serves me, there wasn't much wind that day. As I look closer at the photo and the positions of the crew they may be preparing for a spinnaker take down. Link to comment
henry_hey 0 Posted August 2, 2009 Nice shot, Warren! Robert, if you were to step aboard one of the boats in Warren's captures, you would realize that this shot is, in fact, perfectly centered and has the exact amount of contextual information. Mr Kaplan is a fine sailor and has documented everything (and then some) that we sailors love to see in these photos. I don't believe that he posted this photo to show off his photo altering skills, but rather just to present a beautiful image. I do recommend sailing -- it helps one to relax. ;) Link to comment

yvesf28 0 Posted August 2, 2009 I like the treatment very much - the colors lend themselves to it - but the shot itself is quite lovely and evocative of that sailing moment! Link to comment
jayanti 0 Posted August 3, 2009 The yellow - blue contrast is the soul of this image. Regards. Link to comment
