California Elephant Seal with GPS
Researchers glue GPS units on the head of California elephant seals to track their movement, depth of their dives as well as ocean temperature. Those units travel with the seals for a year and sent out signals when the animals return to the surface.Annually the elephant seals return to Ano Nuevo to molt. Those GPS units come off with their skin. They send out a signal so that the researchers can locate and retrieve them.Ano Nuevo is about 55 miles south of San Francisco, on the California coast: http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=523
