Low light (heavy overcast) made this a little tricky.

I like the look on his face. But I think a portrait orientation would be better to get the whole body in. The image is a little soft - maybe bump up the ISO on an overcast day to keep the shutter speed high. Another trick is to give more space in the photo to the direction they are looking - so you would crop the left side to place the figure on the first of the vertical "Thirds" line.

I like the picture but I think you should have taken it as a portrait unless you were trying to get the shot of him hitting the ball. I would have to say that I like the lighting. Based on the picture, it looks like the perfect time to go and shoot.
