It just catches your eye. Simple but effective. Try it with say a green trace, from the green pencil coming up to the tip of the red pencil

Soemone is doing that with shadows. Might be cool. However, and I repeat this one is very good.

Was the drop shadow added or did it occur naturally? Regardless, this is an excellent example of simple yet effective art. I wish I had thought of it. Excellent work!

Pretty good picture and "eye-catching". One issue may be that the crop is too tight at the bottom. A little lack of Depth. But that goes on well with the diffused shadows. Nice work.

Could be my monitor, but it appears unsharp. Stark, simple, and very effective.

I like the simplicity here, however, I am not convinced that there is the strongest composition here. Feels too empty. Maybe further experimentation and variation on this theme is in order. I'm sure there are a million ideas that could take form from these three colored pencils.

I am very grateful for all the comments. In answer to some of the queries above: this shot has very shallow DOF and only the bases of the pencils are sharp; the drop shadow was added via PS7; yes there is a lot of space but that's why I like this shot (but then I would say that), I want the primary colours and the simplicity rule the picture; I agree that the crop was perhaps too tight at the bottom but I wanted a lot of space above and to one side of the pencils to make it less "static" (if that makes sense!) Thanks again for your comments.

If I'm not mistaken, green is not a primary color. It should be yellow. I like the shot though. I appreciate the minimalistic effect.

One of those shots than teaches me personally a ton....most of us could have assembled, set-up and taken this shot in a few minutes...only we didn't...great, simple concept...well executed...I'll look more closely at whats around me becuase of it....great shot...
