This composition presented me with the dilemma: I wanted some

separation between the green light and the sun, since they seem to be

competing with each other for attention. But, if I move right or

left, the line of the cloud would not lead to the lighthouse. I

didn't have much time and this is what I came up with. Thanks for

your feedback.

The color, tone and light of this shot are superb.

I think it would be top notch with a slight recrop taking the dead area off the right side and creating a more balanced composition.

I agree, a crop on the right is in order, but darn,,, this is one lovely shot. Breath taking!

Please advise me on getting the wonderful clarity you do. Mine never seem this sharp and...life like.

But if I did crop it, here's what it would look like. (Just had to join the crop fest!)

I love this image. Kenneth is getting extreme clarity because Kenneth is a very competent scanner or is having it done by such a person.

Very nice with just a touch of the rising sun, which to me is the most eye catching element. The left half of this image is where the attraction is and I agree that a crop of the right side would enhance the impact of this shot. Here, I present another cropping idea for you to consider.

I can't add anything to what has been already said, but I just couldn't pass this one by without saying, "Great Shot!" The curve of the cloud, reflected is just awsome.

The more I look at this one, the less I think the lighthouse fits in it. It kinda breaks the harmony brought by the cloud / horizon / reflection combination. Otherwise a fantastic picture. Love the 50/50 composition.

It doesn't matter if this is "Perfectly Cropped" or not! You caught the moment perfectly and whatever cropping you feel suits your intentions will not detract from this image !!! Awesome !!

Hi Kenneth,

For while, I was hunting up and down looking for the green light which you talked about but cannot find it --- so much for competing for attention. So, don't worry about the green light, if it were competing for attention, I would have seen it without the need to hunt for it.

Furthermore, after I found the green light, my eyes just bounced between the sun and the green light and they both felt good.

BTW, is this the Coolscan LS4000ED or something else?

It's a very pleasing, calming and attractive photo.

absolutely stunning. maybe i would have tried to frame the lighthouse a bit to either side so the eyes could wander a bit more freely, but it's a beautiful photo either way.

I think this is an incredible shot!
I love the composition which brings all the elements in perfect balance, in the original version.

P.S. I too envy you for the quality of this scan ;-)

I like the panoramic crop myself, but regardless it's a superb image. You have a wonderful eye for nature kenneth, keep shooting.

Ken, You sure opened a box of discussion with this one. On first look I said "too centered" & it looks like I'm not alone. However, it doesn't look like you can make a bad photo out of this one no matter how you crop it. A win - win situation. Good thing you used a '24', it sure gives you lots of options. Best, LM.

I like how the lighthouse is fully enclosed within the reverse-C cloud shape. Moving more to the left to space the sun further off would have ruined this effect.

No crop necessary. IMO, an alternative would have been to shoot from the same spot and turn the camera to the left a bit. Though it might have gotten too dark to left...

hi kenneth. very nice shot. i'm amused by all the various croppings above ;-) i'd prefer to lose a bit on the right, but that's minor. the quality of the scan is tremendous. have you said somewhere which scanner you use? i've got a minolta dimage scan elite II that only dreams of this kind of grainless clarity. thanks so much for sharing.
