This armored catfish apparently wasn't armored enough to protect him from the lightning fast bill of this blue heron. I stood in amazement as this heron stabbed this catfish over and over again sending a loud cracking sound each time through the silent swamp. I could not believe that he went on to swallow the entire catfish whole- hard shell, sharp spines, still wiggling body, and all. I still wonder if this heron lived through the agonizing digestion process. (Please see the complete sequence on my page if you simply can't believe it's possible- like I did.)
