atle.g 0 Posted November 12, 2008 A winner!! My only advice would be to crop the left half tree. In every other way it is gold medal. Regards! Link to comment

copeg 0 Posted November 13, 2008 Talk about a unique take on an iconic view! Great work here...awesome exposure, and the manmade lights add not only a charm to the photo, but also makes a point about the 'human' impact in the valley. Link to comment
simay_zsolt 0 Posted November 13, 2008 very original shot, with excellent lights and those stars look like some fire raindrops Link to comment

anish 0 Posted November 13, 2008 very unique! i have a question - during dusk, when the amount of light on the scene is quickly changing, how do you meter and choose an exposure time for a long exposure like this? Thanks, Anish Link to comment

tar heel 0 Posted November 14, 2008 Anish, I wish I could tell you I have a magic formula for that, but actually, you just fly by the seat of your pants and do everything by dead reckoning. I just guess at it from prior experience. 7 minutes is not that long; the light does not change that rapidly in that short amount of time. This was shot at 200 ISO, 2.8 aperture, 7 minutes. The colors you see here were not visible to the naked eye. The lights in the mist on the valley floor are from auto headlights; the glow behind El Cap is the moon rising in the far east end of the valley, all of which was just gray light to the naked eye. xavier_jamonet1 0 Posted November 14, 2008 A really original view of this often photographied landscape! The lighted clouds in the valley and the stars make a really sweet atmosphere despites the cold suggested by the snow and the night... Regards Xavier Link to comment
kurt2006 0 Posted November 14, 2008 Phil! This is fantastic! It's so difficult to get around in the darkness and winter, even if you are staying in the valley! But to get this amazing arrangement of sky, snow cover AND clouds AND illumination effects, I can't tell you how jealous I am! Seriously, I don't know what to add. The moonlight around El Cap is demanding attention quite strongly, but you may be totally happy with that. I'm very impressed and congratulate you. -Kurt Link to comment
