Taken 10 minutes before this shot. Storm clouds were building quickly. I took several shots in a couple of minutes. This was the only one that exhibited the sunburst.

Lovely, muted colors. Great clouds an starburst effect from the sun. Compositionally, it looks as if the large stone in the center wants to be in the lower right hand corner.

Leigh, this is a superb image (you probably know it already!). Not only aesthetically perfect, but technically also and I admire the way you smoothly controlled the contrast. And what a content! It deserves a large frame!

The colors leap right off the screen. The timing is perfect. But my next thought was, "what kind of filter was used?" The foreground is so bright, this seems a little too filtered to appear natural.

But I still like it.

The only filter used was the one listed above: the Lee 3-stop hard graduated ND filter, which held the brighter sky back to allow proper foreground exposure. It also darkened the clouds.

There is so much comments to this shot that it must be the best. It could be my opinion too if I had the taste of placings. For me, all the photos of this series are equal and on the top.

I'm envious. The lighting in the foreground does it for me. Was that enhanced? This is such a awe inspiring photo. So many simple elements combined to give a great photo. Exposure great everywhere. Congratuations.

Outstanding seascape, artistic composition, and lighting is spot-on. This downsized version gives only a faint hint of the real print, I think. Congrats

This image has been selected for discussion. It is not necessarily the "best" picture the Elves have seen this week, nor is it a contest. It is simply an image that the Elves found interesting and worthy of discussion. Discussion of photo.net policy, including the choice of Photograph of the Week should not take place here, but in the Site Feedback forum.

I like it as it is aesthetically pleasing to me, if I look around the photo I see light , dark, rough and smooth, I have tried this type of photo and this is well executed with rewarding results.

Well done.

Besides the technical perfection, two things strike me as making this stand out from the usual sunset-over-seashore. One is the way the left third of the pic contains all the optimism: sun, blue sky, calm waters, and the other two thirds contain all the threat and conflict: dark clouds, swirling water, dangerous rock. It's a great pic.

Yes, this is indeed a remarkable and pleasing image, and one which is, in my humble opinion, technically faultless. However, it does lack a human, or personal element - and I don't mean a figure - I mean something to identify with!

I still rate it most highly!

Regards, Nick.

It's gorgeous--seems ridiculously small considering the format and the fact that it could probably be blown up to the size of a wall, though.

The centered rock and the slightly off centered sun cause an imbalance in this image for me. It just doesn't seem comfortable. The large foreground space doesn't really allow for an intimate discovery of the texture, color or detail in the large subject. Nicely exposed for sure, but I feel I am too far away from the subjects to really get a good feel from it.

Shots like this really need to grab me or have something a bit 'more' to them to really work. A closer view, a different looking sky or cloud formation. Something that is not common in a sunset shot. This doesn't really offer that to me.

First of all Leigh I also think this is well done but must agree with Dave about the intimacy of this image. The scale of all the elements seem so diminutive to the point that nothing really grabs my attention other than the sun.I think by cropping more off the left one can identify more with the individual elements of the composition as it tightens the balance.I like the overall colors but think more definition and contrast is needed to give personality.
