RickDB 10 Posted October 23, 2008 I have to dedicate this one to Keith Lancaster, it is an unashamed copy of his presentation of the inside of Salisbury Cathedral spire. I can offer three excuses for this plagiarism: 1) PN is about sharing ideas, and this one was too good to pass up. 2) Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. 3) Keith seems to hang about in the same sort of places and might enjoy this. Cheers! RickDB Link to comment
RickDB 10 Posted October 23, 2008 ...Although it appears that the tower is an integral part of the fantastic Baroque Church of St. Nicholas, in fact it has never belonged to it and is actually the property of the town. To make way for the new Church of St. Nicholas (built 1673-1752) the older (13th century) church of St. Nicholas was demolished, along with the parish school, the Romanesque Chapel of St. Wenceslas and cemetary. The Jesuits had to commit to building a replacement belfrey for the town since it was an important vantage point from which the watchman, who had an apartment in the tower, could keep an eye out for fires and raise the alarm by sounding the bells. During the communist regime the tower was a secret observation point for the State Police who would monitor activities at the neighbouring Embassies of western countries. Link to comment

RickDB 10 Posted October 24, 2008 You're right, this only just over half the height at 230', but still 215 steps to the balcony above the belfry - whew! Cheers, RickDB Link to comment
