I like this much better, it has much more depth and I am led right to the misty mountains. I think is wonderful image. A well done from me. Ian!

Nice shot Ian. Moon shots are always tricky but you did very well. Vertical format works on this capture. NDF? and is this just south of Ft. Bragg on Highway 1?

Leo, thanks for coming back.

Raymond, thanks. You either know the area well or you have a good memory and eye. This is indeed just south of Fort Bragg. I was going to spend the night at Fort Bragg and try and catch sunset there. But, it was such a lack-lustre sky (cloudless) that I decided to just keep driving and saw this vista halfway up a long climb around one of the headlands further south. I pulled into the look-out area and quickly set up for a few shots.

What is DNF?

oops! meant NDF ( Nuetral Denisty Filters) I grew up in Mendocino County (Ukiah) Which is why I knew about where you shot this. Beautiful area with lots of Redwoods, Vineyards and some gorgeous coastlines...RAY

I wonder if I would have understood NDF? I always think of GNDs (grad. neutral density filters). Oh well. . .

Yes, I was using a grad. I had a combination of 3-stop reverse and 2-stop soft while taking the series of shots during the sunset. I do NOT know what I was using here. When I was using a longer focal length and the moon was lower down, I was using the 3-stop reverse to try and hold moon details (often paired with the 2-stop soft to blend the edge in). Since there are no details in the moon here, I think this was taken only with the 2-stop.

I also used a number of gradients in PS to accentuate the misty area and enrichen the top and bottom. My original work-up was softer and less contrasty. I posted it here (http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=7961947) and got some helpful suggestions from Jeff Tangen and Leo Burkey.

Hi Rick,

When I took this photograph and originally worked upon it I was under the impression it was in Mendocino. I titled it Mendocino Moonrise.

In my exchange above I thought it was just south of Ft. Bragg. However, an astute local on another forum forced me to reconsider that conclusion. I now believe this is from the lookout just south of Ft Ross, north of Jenner CA, which would be in Sonora. I did consider spending the night at Ft Ross, and then changed my mind moved on. I think this image was taken after that point.
