fred_j._lord 0 Posted October 3, 2002 I think this is the last of the NY shots to be unveiled. I hope to be around large bodies of water again someday and, no, I'm not talking about pitchers of beer. Link to comment
waynemorgan 0 Posted October 3, 2002 Would this be more effective to crop a little of the bottom so that the water meets the corner of the photo. Also right in the middle of the photo there is a wave with a purple cast that doesn't look right to me. Is that from digital attribute in the camera? Other than that nice peaceful soft colors make this enjoyable to see Link to comment
kkwan 0 Posted October 3, 2002 Good composition with a strong lead-in line that takes the eyes towards the sun. The distant shoreline adds to the sense of depth. I really like the texture in the rocks and the colour of the reflected light. Perfect timing too. I think Wayne's cropping suggestion has merit. I'd also like to see something that can establish a sense of scale, like a person. It might or might not work, just an idea to try. Link to comment
jim schwaiger 0 Posted October 3, 2002 Again, I think you've captured a great moment. I thought there was a green cast in the water, but the more I look at it the harder it is to decide if the colors are right or not. I agree with Kenneth that a foreground object could improve the image, but alas they aren't always where you need them. I'd rate it a 23 on the forthcoming 27 point scale, heh heh. Link to comment
fred_j._lord 0 Posted October 3, 2002 I had to make several tries to eliminate most of the purple in the froth at center. What I see in PS and what I see in Photo.Net are radically different with this image. PN absolutely desaturates the dickens out of it. I'm sure everyone else is totally aware of this fact but I just noticed its extreme nature on this image. Let me know what you think about the changes. The water is green, by the way. It's that way in all the shots from this spot. Link to comment
stephen_lau1 0 Posted October 5, 2002 No trees??? I like this shot and I think the composition works well. I won't suggest cropping the bottom off as it offers another diagonal line and some base for this image. The color seems to be unnatural, just like your other shot - Lake Ontario. Did you increae the saturation too much? Link to comment
peterneibert 0 Posted October 5, 2002 It's not so much that the color of these Ontario pictures is unnatural (although I can see why Stephen uses that word), it seems more that you have come across a new color model that you've been trying-out during this trip. Perhaps the atmosphere and the light around the lake is part of it, but have you done something special for this series? push/pull, unique filter combo, film packed in dry ice -- what is it?Jim Schwaiger: to net out a normalized 23 on a 27 point scale, you'll have to correct your rating to 31. pcn Link to comment
fred_j._lord 0 Posted October 5, 2002 Since this is an all-digital image, the film treatments aren't applicable. I have been experimenting with various treatments in PS. I am, however, unable to make any other images look anything like this so some of the blame must lie with the light and color combinations which were so different from any other location I've shot recently. The water was very green and the morning/evening light was very warm. Probably, in an effort to bring back what was lost in translation to this site, I overdid some things in PS. In any case, I wasn't attempting a pure naturalistic image and will be going further afield when I receive the filters ordered as they do not perfectly maintain reality. Hopefully I will stabilize just short of pure abstraction. Incidentally, I used no filters for any of these shots. Link to comment
hatless 0 Posted October 5, 2002 Nice colors and light, but it seems blurry and the texture, especially towards the bottom, looks a little slimy from the contrast and glare. Link to comment
benny 0 Posted October 5, 2002 making a good picture is more than pressing the button whenever you see something nice or even beautiful Link to comment
fred_j._lord 0 Posted October 6, 2002 Well partner, you got me there. The rocks in the foreground are covered with water and slimy waterplants and the exposure was 1/10 second to allow the waves to blur some. I checked your portfolio. Nice work! Nice turn of phrase there, Benny, is it something you originated? You really seem attached to it. Link to comment
bobby douglas 0 Posted October 9, 2002 I think that this Slimy Beautiful shot on Ice deserves better than a 2/2 Come on guy's give my homey Fred some props don't just shoot him down. Yes the image dose have some color problems but we can fix that. (take a look) It is unfortunate that it's beautiful though, Really can't do much about that. Link to comment
fred_j._lord 0 Posted October 9, 2002 Bobby: I guess nobody can stand the fact that the water is green and the light is orange/gold including you. It does look more conventional if you take out the green. So, what the heck, let it all be orange/gold. The water really was green, however. I can't claim I was going for accuracy anyway!
