Jack, the French bulldog. Please give feedback.

j.j._blair

I shot with a wide open aperture and made sure his eyes were in focus. I think when I made the print, I dodged the eyes and burned in some highlights. Shot rated at ISO 1600 and developed at 3200.

Good, but how do I get that frame? I always ruin my already miserable prints by trying to improve them with a silly frame - I'd like to know how to make this kind of frame.

Use a router to carefully widen your negative carrier. (Carefully, being the operative word.) If you aren't making your own prints, then ask your professional lab for "sloppy borders."

OK, that's a really great picture. You're not getting much for aesthetic points because the dog just isn't all that cute, but it's nice originality. I like the way you have such a narrow depth of field - it works well here as does the after-effect framing.

A good pet portrait. Two things I notice right away; you've cut off one of his ears and there is a human hand at the bottom of the photo. I love the choice of B&W and your contrast. Might try to avoid having so much light behind you if you do this agian... the overly reflective eyes are somewhat distracting, imho, of course. It might be fun to catch him sitting and do the same thing, same dof and focused on his face, but including the rest of his body in the photo, oof, as a background of sorts. Very nice. : )

The dof has resulted in little of Jack being in focus - but perhaps this was your intention, to highlight just the face. I think the pose you've captured is great - superb texture in that tongue.

First, this is one of the better dog photos I have seen here, or many other places for that matter. Second, great expression! Third, I like the shallow DOF and the left eye and snout are really SHARP. That is what makes this photo stand out (in my opinion).
Some of the background elements (bottom area of frame, and upper right behind ear) are distracting. Perhaps a wider aperture could have blurred them more to tone them down, or, you could have set up the shot against a background and taken these elements out before shooting. But I'm not nit picking, you have created a strong candid.
Don't worry about cutting off the ear, we all know dogs have them, and unless you are going for direct representation (or shooting for Gray's Anatomy) your artistic license should prevail.

First of all, the shallow depth of field was completely intentional. This is actually more of a street shot than a pet shot, simply because it was a dog sitting in a cafe. This was not a controlled environment or planned shot. I liked the gobo effect of the tree in the dog's eye. The shallow DOF was intended to focus specifically on his eyes. Thank you to those of you who noticed the intentional DOF, rather than complain about it. As far as using an even narrower DOF, I was on f1.4! I don't think I could have blurred things out any more.

A great candid, stands on its own and gives new meaning to street photography. A very memorable image. Nice detailed blacks.

I think the shallow depth of field is great. It gives the dog personality and scale. I don't like the crop and the exposure could be back a third.

oh how i loooove those frenchies! our family has had them for 20 years (mom's a breeder) and i just think that a frenchie face is the most expressive of them all - you've captured a great look here!
