Guest Guest Posted June 9, 2008 Well, a classic composition of thirds. The problem with fog is that it often looks better in reality than in a photo. I think the photographer has done a good solid job here with promising components that in the end were not so fullfilling. Now, seeing this, had I done anything differently? I think a little more foreground would give it a bit more depth. But would I have noticed it there and then? I wonder how this would look in fairly steep B&W. It might make quite a graphic photo that way. Link to comment

vs1 0 Posted June 9, 2008 I agree with Juha. B/W would be better on a certain point of view. Anyway, impression of road to nowhere is just good enough for me. Cheers, VS Link to comment
dougityb 0 Posted June 9, 2008 I hear what you guys are saying, but I thought it was too drab in black & white, perhaps for the reasons Juha mentions about foggy shots in general. Also this scene reminded me of a shot I made a few years back, so posting it in color didn't feel so redundant. Nevertheless, I'd be happy to see you post your suggestions. I'll look for out takes to see if more foreground could have been obtained (the answer is yes, there was lots of foreground available. I'm thinking now that I probably didn't want to put the tree any further up in the horizontal middle). Link to comment
dougityb 0 Posted June 9, 2008 Here's what I brought home that day (October 18 2006). The posted image is one of those marked with the red spot, but I'm not sure exactly which one. Link to comment
MichaelChang 12 Posted June 10, 2008 For what it's worth, here's a monochrome variation. I think it's the green that is too pronounced in colors which are not terribly complementary. Link to comment
dougityb 0 Posted June 11, 2008 that looks fine, Michael. Thanks So, you're saying the green in the color version is objectionable? or that it has an overall green cast? Link to comment
MichaelChang 12 Posted June 11, 2008 Doug, I know your original question was about composition and point of view, but I have trouble separating those elements from other influencing factors such as color. I think the green is drawing too much of my attention thus skewing the perception of compositional balance, so yes, the green is objectionable. Link to comment
dougityb 0 Posted June 12, 2008 Fair enough, Michael. It is kind of strong in the corner, considering everything else is drab and brown. Link to comment
gordonjb 10,860 Posted June 13, 2008 Green in June , how can that be wrong? I love the feeling of this Doug !! I would hang a very big slab of this in my living room. I've driven by this very spot over and over again, we all have, that is what makes this grand. Yes I know I used the word 'this' way too many times. Link to comment
