I mean, it's not a new concept to select a part of a picture and desaturate (or sepia) the rest, but the way you've done it here is interesting, to say the least. It has an MC Escheresque feel to it that keeps me looking. I think the tilt of the selected area is pretty important. Had you kept that part parallel to the image borders, it would be far less attractive. When I saw the thumbnail, I thought you had placed a color print behind the twigs, or something like that and my curiosity was piqued; now that I see what it really is, I'm surprised, and pleased that my curiosity is still engaged.
