samrat 1 Posted February 18, 2008 This photo of the moon is my first attempt in this direction. It was taken from a moving bus and has been enlarged a bit. I'd be thankful for suggestions on how best to approach such subjects and what is the best lens for such purpose. Link to comment
sumptee 0 Posted February 18, 2008 Samrat, A beauty color moon is a amazing picture if you are able to capture it! Very, Very, Very hard shot! Especially with the moon being so bright most of the time! I see what you were trying to capture here, but have a few question before I critique your photo. Did you use a Tripod? What Camera or lens did you use? Is it blurry because of camera shake or crop? Give me these answer and I'll give you a more accurate critique. I don't really like to assume or photos! I have added a moon photo I took a long time ago so you can see what I am taking about, it took me about 20 tries to get this one! Jeremy Link to comment
larose 0 Posted February 18, 2008 I was JUST taking photos of the moon, myself, last night. As with mine, I have a bit of blur due to not using a tripod (missing my camera-to-tripod attachment, I swear I locked it onto my tripod after I used it last). I did, however, lay flat on the ground with my telephoto lens and did all sorts of breathing and non-breathing techniques to keep the camera as still as possible. Still not satisfied with my results. I'm looking forward to the full moon later this week, weather-willing (and after I purchase another spare attachment). Link to comment
samrat 1 Posted February 18, 2008 ...for being so understanding. I've seen your version of the moon and I can only wish I can do that someday. To start with, I have just started shooting with my DSLR and am really just getting used to it at the moment. This photo was taken from a moving bus, through a glass window, without any filter (and tripod, obviously!). The moon was clear and I used the full zoom (of Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DG Macro). It was then enlarged to enlarge the size of the moon. Of course, it did no justice to the Canon EOS 40D!!! Link to comment
sumptee 0 Posted February 18, 2008 Samrat you get a A+ for your effort here! First of all let me say Congrats on purchasing a DSLR! I personly love the 40D (Even Though I shoot with a Canon 5D, don't tell my 5D that may make her jeoulous, LOL) But as I mention a moon shoot is a amazing photo and Im even amazed that you were able to capture this shot from an moving bus though a glass.....behind a brick wall, under a the seat! LOL! Nah, it is wonderful to see that you are trying to capture some great moments. Don't stop trying. Here are a few helps(suggestions) that I may give you. Always try to take the moon on the ground with a tripod.(usally this is because on any moving objects, especially the bus vibrations are going to come into play) I usally try to under expose it due to the moon beening so bright. But you can compensate for this by trying to capture your photo during sunset or rise if that is possible. If you have a remote shooter thingy, or a timmer would due try using these as they will help you with less camera shake which is always a problem with night photos. Now, think about the bright side as my critiquer before me mentioned. There is a full moon coming up latter on this week so you can try, try, try, try again weather permitting of course. Try to scope out a nice place to get your photo and you will be taken far better moon pictures than I can capture. Kind regards Jeremy Link to comment
afuecker 0 Posted February 18, 2008 Use 1. tripod,2. cable release or timer. If you're in the vicinity of 1/15-1/60 shutterspeed use mirror lock-up. 3. stop down lens about 2 stops from wide open. The meter gets fooled by the reflected light and tells you to over-expose.Rather check your LCD. Last not least: focus manually.Good luck! best regards A. Link to comment
