This is a critique only! I have a camera and lense, no software,

that's it. I am new to photography. I really like snowscapes. They

turn out very flat to me. If you would like to comment on my

portfolio, would be great. Advise needed.... thanks in advance.

Hi, Gail,

Snow can be tricky to expose as your camera's light meter will want to underexpose it, but you have done a fine job here and the snow is nice and white. The comp is good as well with just enough snow at the bottom of the photo and sky at the top. The three darker images (trees) are good as well as 3's are always good in a comp. The sky is a little blown out, but it still works balance-wise with the snow at the bottom. The trees are nice and sharp and appear to be in focus. I also like the shadows in the snow as it breaks up the swatch of white.

A little more contrast may help such a photo and shooting in late afternoon or early morning light will always help. What time of day did you capture this?

You can never go wrong with a polarizing filter or a graduated neutral density filter either. Bryan Peterson talks about these in his seminal book, Understanding Exposure.

Very nice all in all and keep it up!

Thanks for your comments.. I will look for the shooting info. I will go get a filter this week. This is why I'm on this site, to learn. Gail

A polarizing filter would help, but on a capture like this one, I can not see how a "graduated neutral density filter" would make any difference. I believe that the length and quality of the lens you are using is more important than anything else. The longer the lens the flater the image. Thats why I was asking for the details. A tripod and 2second delayed capture or remote triger helps too... Regards, Antoni
