Pathway to the Peaks

I am have recently been doing alot of back packing skiing and snowshoeing using whatever I can to get to higher elevations. This was taken In British Columbia in the back country. I took some time off work and waited the bad weather for a week before I was able to get my first sunny day this year I saw the S-Curve and knew I could return when the light was better and creating some shadows. I waited for the late afternoon light and got the shadows I was looking for. The only thing I was I could change is the wind was blowing the snow and made some of the middle ground fuzzy. I have chosen to keep the image as I saw with cool tones and remember it as I saw it. Freezing cold ! I took this with my new G9 and I shot it without a tripod or filters. Thanks for any comments or critiques Canon G9 f/8 1/1/400 Sec If you get a chance to check some of recent pics from my last trip into the mountains and tell me which ones don't work for you at http://kevinmcneal.smugmug.com/gallery/4057093#247016745Where The Earth Meets The Ocean Please Visit Me at kevinmcnealphotography.com Kevin McNeal Olympia, Washington

Composition is fabulous and the overall blue tone accentuates the cold but is a little too strong. Dialing back on the contrast would preserve the effect but add realism, especially to the sky which is a bit too cyan. Overall though a great photo. Congrats. You have an eye.

a fantastic composition, very nice depth and detail, very nice to the eye

I have to agree about the saturation in the sky - it's too strong for my taste.

Kevin, do not care and continue your passion because you did a fantastic job, this ia great shot. I would like to add that this is for sure a real picture but however I don't understand what is so terrible in digital alteration if this will improve the photo. Photo is an art and it's a moving art, is not static as it was before digital camera with a good quality was invented. Digital pictures usually are a bit darker comapared with film photo so 90% of cases you have to change the brightness, this is also digital alteration.

Wow! I have to jump into this one!

Changing brightness and contrast is NOT digital alteration. That is always a choice made in photofinishing, whether film or digital. If that's digital alteration, then we've been altering digitally since film was invented.

And there is, in my mind at least, a big, big difference between genuine photos and photos that have had one or more of their components added by digital means. This one required somebody to tramp out at an ungodly hour in an ungodly temperature to capture a pristine scene before even an animal ruined it. I do digital alterations from time to time, just for the fun of it. But to me they never have the same value as natural shots I've gone out and tracked down. So I can see why Kevin was offended by the comment.

After looking at more of your photos I decided to delete my original post. Perhaps it is because I've never seen such places that I jumped to conclusions. The strange contrasts I noted between the foreground, trees, and background are mind-boggling. I agree we are all here to learn. Please accept my apology and my congratulations on the shot. Perhaps my critique, after reviewing your other photos, should be to watch your selection when playing with contrast and highlights. The darker sky around the trees makes it look odd. Thanks for setting me straight!

I love how the shapes, colors, textures and contrast give this photograph such a surreal feeling. The wind blowing gives it that real feel at the same time. I love the snow so I'm a little biased. =)

Kevin

This is absolutely wonderful - a dream like composition which leads the eye into the depth of the image. I don't think I've seen such a classic 'S' shape before. It works brilliantly.

I want to tell you, Kevin, this shot just blows me away! The composition is amazing, and the colors are glorious! I saw this in Canon's winter photo contest, and I voted for it as the people's choice. How did you do in that contest?

Bravo!

I have read your writing after looking at your photo.  And then I looked at it again.  So the curve and shadow made the picture more excited.  Thank you.
