Death Valley Dunes, photographer's paradise! This is my recent take ofthe first light on the cold winter morning. I had to walk more than amile inside and only then I started finding out virgin dunes, where Istopped seeing any human footsteps. First light formed the lovely mazeof the light and shadows. I composed this shot with the foregroundwith abstract waves and the shadow curve taking from right hand cornertowards bigger dunes and eventually to the other dunes and themountains behind them.

The soft curves all over is what I feel most evocative of thefeelings, the melody that plays there in the early and late hours ofthe day.

It would be worth knowing what other photographers think on this,good-bad, any comments are appreciated.

Thanx and regards,

+Lalit

Thank you for the image's description. Very interesting for me to find out so many details about it, and the effort.

I like the dunes sand. Beautiful view!

Yes: the Curve -- in dramatic motion from bottom right to left and back right again, ending in the sharp point of the dune's peak -- makes the whole thing work. What really does it for me, though is the shadow just beyond the mid-frame portion of the curve. There'd be much less drama in the image without that.

One thing I might do differently is to lighten up the reddish background mountains a bit (or even a lot). I find their strong contrast and dark tones to be a bit distracting from the presentation of the dunes.

Very nice job you've done with the Stovepipe Wells dunefield. Wonderful curves and lightplay. I agree with John that if you did a little work with layers you could probably adjust the coloring of the background mountains. All in all, this is a terrific photograph. Well done, Lalit; and Happy New Year! Cheers! Chris

Thanx all for the input. Regarding the darker mountains in the background, the original full print is not that dark (although I found that contrast intimidatingly inviting :-)

absolutely beautiful light and shadows. You might want to try cropping out the blue sky - it is quite nice as it is, but I just covered the sky with a paper and the view of the dunes alone is quite nice as well. great shot!
