Alan Burke is a descendant of a water-sports and sporting family,

born and raised at Burke's Beach, Barbados 1 mile south of

Bridgetown, a beach named after his family for over 70 years. His

family is made up of a variety of sport champions - yachting,

fishing, water polo, swimming, cricket, football, tennis, horse

racing and SURFING.

 

Alan started surfing in 1979 at the age of 9 at Burke's Beach and

competed for the 1st time in 1984at Soup Bowl Bathsheba, placing 4th

overall in the Junior division. March 1985 Caribbean Sun Country Cup

Puerto Rico was the 1st event on the National Team representing

Barbados, a position that has been held to present, qualifying for

every National Team since March 1985 an accomplishment that no other

Barbadian surfer has achieved. He won Junior Division and 3rd in open

1985 Orchard International at Soup Bowl, Bathsheba (10 Countries

participated) in 8-10ft surf at 15 years old earning sports person of

the week in Barbados

Alan Burke is one of the most successful surfers in the Caribbean and

the most successful in Barbados. He is now fulfilling his dream and

true love of teaching the sport that made his life.

 

. He represented Barbados at 8 World Surfing Games (Olympics of

surfing), which is more than any other surfer in the World and the

only surfer to place in the top ten in three different divisions -

7th Junior 1986 Newquay Cornwall England, 9th Open 1992 Lacanau

France, Bronze Medal longboard 1998 Cascais Portugal. Competing

professionally for 6 years full time and 3 years part time, on the

Association of Surfing Professionals East Tour with great success,

winning the prestigious East Coast Surfing Championships Virginia

Beach and NKF/Ron Jon Cocoa Beach back to back in 1991 finishing 2nd

overall on the ASP East Tour and taking part in a number of World

Tour events between 1988-1990 with success. In 1994 won the Natural

Art $10,000US Top Dog at the Bowl Pro. National Junior Champion 1985-

1987 and National Champion 7 times. Senior National Champion 8 times

and Long Board National Champion 10 times. Surfer of the year in

open, longboard, & Senior mens 1994, 1995, 1996, and open, long board

in 2003. Won 3 Pro Long Board Events. In 1990 was voted most

outstanding young person in Barbados, served as President of the

Barbados Surfing Association from 1997-2002 the longest serving

president to date. Surfed and competed in Australia, Brazil,

California, England, France, Guadaloupe, Japan, Margarita, Niijima,

Puerto Rico, Portugal, entire East Coast of Florida, North Carolina,

Cape Hatteras, New Jersey, Hawaii, Trinidad, Tobago, South Africa

(Durban) and Venezuela.

This is just one brilliant example of the water sport variations in Durban. I'd love to indulge in surfing when I reach next month by a flight to South Africa. Alan Burke you are pro at your work but surely you get people to love this sport by your sharp manoeuvres depicted by the picture.
