susan stone 0 Posted August 13, 2007 Some of my favorite places to photograph are old homestead's. I love the silence of these abandoned places, then the wind will come up and whisper stories to me of the people that used to live there. Thanks for the visit friends. Link to comment
lonebearimages 0 Posted August 13, 2007 This is quite good, Susan. Very simple, but very effective; and I particularly like your black and white conversion. Neat sky, good depth of field. A 7/6 anonymously. Very well done. Cheers Link to comment
susan stone 0 Posted August 13, 2007 This one's definitely better when "viewed larger", I wonder why when we post an image to PN it's not as large as it can be from the get go?! Link to comment
susan stone 0 Posted August 13, 2007 I was typing the comment about viewing larger, came back to look again and bingo there you were. When I was working on this image I decided to go B&W to evoke that stark barren look of the prairie and I liked the range of tones and the nice sky, but I'm always a little disappointed when I post to PN 'cause an image looses so much detail, in my master file the textures of the wood and grass just "pop". susan stone 0 Posted August 13, 2007 I'm glad to know someone is viewing the new critique requests on PN at this time of day, your wonderful comments are showing up faster than I can answer them. And it's always nice to meet new "friends". Link to comment
susan stone 0 Posted August 13, 2007 B&W isn't normally my forte but this image was just begging for a conversion, and I'm glad you liked it. Link to comment
dtimoce 0 Posted August 13, 2007 Simple and powerful, not too sharp, but whit lots of details .. Very inspiring .. Link to comment
susan stone 0 Posted August 13, 2007 My master copy is sharper than this and I do wish the detail had carried over when I posted to PN, but I'm happy with it. Thanks for the visit. Link to comment
dtimoce 0 Posted August 13, 2007 Sorry, just to put it clearly .. The "not too sharp" part was not negative; i see lots of over sharpened images lately, i just found the right amount of sharpness on yours. Link to comment
lonebearimages 0 Posted August 13, 2007 Susan, I left you a little note on tha B&W of mine that you commented on. Cheers! Chris Link to comment
katzpjs 50 Posted August 14, 2007 The skies are wonderful in this image and your choice of B&W accentuates the grasses and the old corral very nicely. Looks like the cows got out...PN cannot show the image posted as large as the member has submitted because some members, myself included, choose to post them so large that it is sometimes necessary to add a scroll bar under and beside the image in order for it to be seen in its entirety. Writing computer source code that could handle this would add much complexity to the computer language that allows us all to view the image and the verbiage on the computer screen. It would not be worth the effort and many PN users would not be happy with the additional time it would take to download the H U G E image that some photographers would post, especially those who still use dial-up phone line in Montana to access the Internet. 8~)# Link to comment
bosshogg 4 Posted August 14, 2007 First I have to say what a good point Shawn made. That hurts! I think the way they handle it is pretty good. I know that I usually upload about 1200 pixels on the long side, and anyone who wants to take the trouble to see it larger still gets a pretty good image. As for this one, you got it right. The tones in the sky and grass are just right to my thinking. The light on the distant narrow band of hills is quite lovely, and the composition is impeccable. Oh yeah, I would print this BIG. thadley 15 Posted August 14, 2007 You certainly got it right. The image is beautiful - good dynamic range. Link to comment

cherlyn 1 Posted August 14, 2007 Deserted place always held a unspoken charm for photographers as it emits a lonely abandoned mood without the need of words. Lovely place , great tones & composition. Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted August 15, 2007 Beautiful B/W Susan, There is a nice connection of strenght between the wood poles on the L and the sky on the upper R. very nice as well is the crop you did and the dispesion of ellements on the frame including the textuted FG weeds. The atmospher of desertion, of past history is beautiful... susan stone 0 Posted August 16, 2007 Not too worry Daniel, I didn't take your comment negatively, I was just lamenting my editing woes. Thanks Chris for answering my questions. Yup Shawn, the cows are long gone and the homesteaders....well you get my point. I'd love to print this one BIG David but my Espson isn't as BIG as your Epson. Hello Tony, when I first started converting to B&W I was having a hard time getting that "dynamic range", but I think it's getting better. Hey you "sunny South" girl, thanks for the comment. I love these old lonely places. I'm glad you like this one Cherlyn and it sounds like you share my interest in the way a place like this sets a mood. You really studied this image Pnina, I hadn't made the connection of the sky and posts, but you're absolutely right.....it works. Thanks for the visit Maria, B&W seemed to be the only way to go to keep that stark somber mood. Link to comment
Phil_Light 795 Posted August 16, 2007 Fabulous black and white. Great sky contrasted with the sharp posts of the corral and wonderful wispy textures of the grass in the foreground. If you can send me a large, high resolution file (300 dpi). In whatever you want for a finished print size 11 X 14 or 16 X 20 inch for example I'll get it printed for you on a large format archival ink printer (that Epson you were talking about!) I have a printer I want to try and it might be good to see what he can do for me (you) on the first go-round? I think you have my e-mail, let me know if you are interested? He tells me $22.00 for a 16 X 20 if the file is print-ready! I'll even underwrite the cost of this print if you'd like on the first one. Lets me see if he can do a good job with black and white too. TIFF image or PSD are preferred. Link to comment
susan stone 0 Posted August 16, 2007 Your generous offer has left me speechless for the moment Philip! I recently bought some 11x17 paper and my Epson will print that large so I'm going to give that a try, I've never printed ANY of my recent imagery bigger than 8x10, so it'll be interesting. Thank you so much for the comments and support. I may not have your email any more, I changed email addresses with the job change and don't have a lot of the old ones. Link to comment
david shelby 0 Posted August 17, 2007 Excellent B&W with a gray scale that is in the perfect mode.Composition is right on. I see the difference in your images posted. Fron the first to now! Keep up the style and postings. Link to comment
susan stone 0 Posted August 19, 2007 David the image of the Moose in the lake is very beautiful, a very fortunate capture, even without the Moose it's still stunning. Thanks for viewing and commenting on my image. Link to comment
