I was recently driving by the Salton Sea in late afternoon. The

temperature was about 110 degrees. I saw these beautiful reflections

studding the surface of the sea. I wondered why no one was around to

enjoy this curious scene. I parked near the water and got out of my

car. Within a minute, I was overcome by the combination of a gazillion

buzzing flies and the stench of dead fish cooking in the summer heat.

This was a tough one to take.I took it with my Nikon D-200. The dead

fish and oppressive heat and buzzing flies made me oblivious to any

settings. It is minimally tooled in Photoshop with slight temp and

contrast adjustment.

Very interesting environmental image. It captures the essence of a story, and it has an aesthetic element as well. Nicely done.

If you hadn't told us these were dead fish, I wouldn't have guessed. I like the picture and the concept, but if dead fish was the subject, you need to say it stronger in the picture itself.

The picture is interesting for its own sake however, and is meaningful just as it is, with no explanation.

Thank you both for your comments. I had some shots that had some dead fish on the shore in the foreground but it seemed to detract from the serenity of the water. I suppose more of a close up of one in the foreground would have been interesting. To tell the truth, it was about all I could do to stand and fire off a few quick ones.

This works very well on so many levels. Nearly an abstract, nearly non-representational, strongly high key. Good stuff. Even with a simple title and no story this works. With the story it is even stronger.
