skyjammer 0 Posted August 6, 2007 I'm learning to use my 105mm f/2.8 Nikon macro lens. Please provide feedback. Also, would appreciate tips from any owners of this lens on things to whatch out for (if any). Thanks! Link to comment
skyjammer 0 Posted August 6, 2007 Just to be clear, the intent here was to show the progression of DOF as you look deeper into the picture. Link to comment
thadley 15 Posted August 7, 2007 Firstly: I like this image taken in good overcast lighting and I appreciate the thought and time put into the composition i.e. main subject on one side and supporting out-of-focus elements on the right side. I too am learning to use my new Tamron 90 mm macro and I think I am getting better at it. You have been given some low ratings on this photo and you may just be a victim of people tired of seeing 'standard' flower photos and not taking the time to provide some feedback. An area for improvement is the sharpness of the photo: it is a little soft and this can be improved in several ways: 1. after preparing the 'small sized' photo for PN you should sharpen the image before submitting it. I have not learned the 'smart sharp' function with PS so I use the regular Unsharp filter Amount 35, Radius 0.5 and threshold zero. I always have the full sized (-100%) image on my monitor and check and uncheck the preview button. These figures are very variable depending on the size of the image, subject matter etc. 2. I might have stopped down the lens just a bit and when feasible use a tripod. After you have mastered the art of 'standard' flower photos then you have to see what you can take that is a bit different from the rest of the folks. You can also look at the 'top PN flower' photos and try and see what it is that people like about them. After all of that commenting , this is a good photo and keep up the good work. Link to comment
thadley 15 Posted August 7, 2007 Made some very subtle changes - see attached. darkened the 4 edges very slightly (could probably use a little more) to draw your eye to the main flower - cloned out some white spots in the front petals (artistic decision) - added a little border to the photo. Did an unsharp filter on it - have to be careful you don't oversharp. Link to comment
skyjammer 0 Posted August 7, 2007 Dude! I really appreciate your comments! As far as the 3/3 ratings, I don't mind them. To each his own. It'd be nice if the 3/3 rater made the effort to at least state what they don't like about the picture, or what could be improved. It just seems asinine to rate low without providing feedback, IMHO. I mean, what's the point then? You might as well not rate it at all. But anyway.....:-) I hear what you're saying about the sharpening. I actually did use the 'smart sharpen' feature in PS3, but I didn't want to oversharpen it. Your version of this shot is certainly more crisp, without looking oversharpened. I like! Thanks again for the constuctive feedback, Tony. You're the man! Cheers, -Ade Link to comment
