New at portraits, need advice please. Thanks

Not a bad early attempt. Advice would be to keep looking around, see what you like in other portraits, and just keep going. The lighting feels a little off, maybe the shadow on the right side of his nose is a bit strong. Eyes seem good. Expression is nice. Many of the highlights on his skin are rich and soft, nice. Most distracting to me is the circle of light on the top of his head, creates a sort of ring. Also, I'd try to drop the light off a bit as you get to his shirt, so our eyes are drawn more to his face. His shirt, especially because of the striped pattern, is demanding a lot of attention. (A simpler black and white striped shirt might work better. The varieties of stripes may not be working to your advantage here.)

As Fred said, plus I think that a bit more fill in the shadowy area of the face would do it some good. But - a pretty good image IMHO.
