vancouverphotographer 1 Posted July 10, 2007 Not the highest quality - don't think I held my big zoom steady enough and the crop doesn't help ... but what do you think. Thanks for looking. Link to comment
marc12074 0 Posted July 10, 2007 The head is a little blurry but still good detail and the subject is in a nice position. Link to comment
vancouverphotographer 1 Posted July 10, 2007 Thanks Marc. Yep, if only the head/eyes were sharp ... I still can't really figure out what went wrong here - the exposure was: shutter speed 1/1000th at f5.6 .... maybe just a combination of bad focus and handshake. Link to comment
dangoldman 0 Posted July 10, 2007 Probably. Getting accurate focus on birds is difficult. And, speaking from experience, my camera seems to have trouble with GBH... I dont know why, but i get a lot of OOF shots of that bird... This shot would be good enough for me to save and maybe add to the portfolio, but i dont know if i would have submitted it. vancouverphotographer 1 Posted July 10, 2007 Hey Dan, thanks ... I probably should not have submitted it but at the same time, I have seen so many great shots of the GBH with a big fish in it's beak, and this was my first time getting one with this size of fish - I think I got a bit overexcited. rogerleekam 0 Posted July 10, 2007 Still a good capture, Dale. I have a few not as good as this, and to get him carrying food is special and hard to get. Link to comment
vancouverphotographer 1 Posted July 10, 2007 Thanks Roger. Yep it's difficult to be sure ... I am never able to get close to these guys at this lake but we spotted it and just kept an eye on it. I got lucky and looked at the right time later on in the morning and saw it just grabbing a fish so I quickly went to as close as I could along the shore and just kept shooting. Darn Tamron mega zoom is not that quick to focus either. Link to comment

dangoldman 0 Posted July 11, 2007 Dale, i'll betcha anything its faster than me trying to manual focus a 400mm manual focus lens! Link to comment
vancouverphotographer 1 Posted July 11, 2007 Hey Dan, I don't doubt you because after this shot, I put my 2x extender on my Tamron 200-400mm, I tried to manually focus and it looked sharp in the viewfinder but darn it all, I think there's a compatibility problem with my extender with the lens and my camera because all the pics came out crappy. Thanks btw for checking out my stuff. Link to comment
eye of the lens 0 Posted July 16, 2007 SWEEEEt Shot. Getting that action in the moment. We live for these moments(do we not). Well done. Barbara Link to comment
vancouverphotographer 1 Posted July 17, 2007 Thanks Barbara. Yep, unless one is a serious birder, these opportunities are few and far in between for sure - I got lucky here but wished I could have grabbed a better shot. Link to comment
