jan_piller 0 Posted June 1, 2007 I'm so tired of sunsets but you have executed this brilliantly! Bravo. Link to comment
eirik_holm_yvik 0 Posted June 2, 2007 I am very tired of sunsets too, but due to the fact that most of them are mediocre both in terms of originality and the technical aspect of it. This however, is a very good picture, regardless of its subject. From the technical point of view, the colours are sober and elegant. Most pictures of sunsets are so vulgar, shot with an extreme wide angle lens and saturation on maximum of what the film/sensor is capable of. These pictures are like girls with way too much make-up, walking around in sports suits with strong colours. Vulgar. This picture however, is just right. The faint clouds, the soft sand, and the beautiful golden light. The composition is also very elegant, mostly due to the fact that the sun is not included in the frame. We see the reflections in the water, so we know the sun is there, but since it is not in the frame, there is one less element to compete for the viewer's attention. Why do photographer's tend to include everything in the frame? We should all learn from painters the art of subtlety. Well done Jeff! Link to comment
mikestacey 0 Posted June 2, 2007 Interesting Jeff, especially the colour. Looks like you've got the long exposure thing sorted? How long was this one? Is that the moon's reflection? Link to comment
jeff.grant 0 Posted June 2, 2007 Thanks for the feedback, folks. Eirik, thanks for taking the time to comment so fully. Confirmation and insight such as yours is rare indeed, and very much appreciated. Mike, yes, it's the moon. That's one of the advantages of living close to the beach. This is 13 seconds at f/11. I'm still waiting for the firmware upgrade but this is breaking waves so the blur happens quickly. Link to comment
LenMarriott 9 Posted February 21, 2010 You've not posted since my last visit. I assume you are still traveling. So, I had to go digging. This one is nicely laid out in that the foreground, middle ground, and sky areas are roughly proportional, the middle being allotted a tad more space. Must have been taken just after sunset to maintain the low contrast between the beach and the moon's reflection. Hits the sweet spot in the lighting ratios to be able to do that. The breaking waves come across on my screen as a mist or fog, adding an element of mystery. Nice return for your investment. Best, LM. Link to comment
jeff.grant 0 Posted February 21, 2010 Thanks Len, your critiques are always appreciated. I like shots like these where the moon rises just after sunset. There is a small window when conditions are right but it's always a lottery. Link to comment
