kristina_kraft 0 Posted July 16, 2008 Teens! Her hair style doesn't go together with her gentle face expression. Orange hair and blue eyes go in harmony and overall skin tones are perfect. I suppose it was under the natural light, outside. I wouldn't crop anything. It is framed properly. I think that this portrait speaks about the mood. She looks melancholic and dreamy, totally. I'd title it "Hey, wake up girl." 6/6 Link to comment
peterd 0 Posted July 16, 2008 Photo: Great. Hair: Disgusting. Put the two together and you have an interesting picture for sure. Link to comment
Jeff Lear 0 Posted July 17, 2008 I agree with Jen Lambert, I see some green in the skin tone. It could just be reflected light from something we can't see, but, especially to the (viewers) right of her mouth and below her bottom lip. I would not crop anything, I think the tree anchors the composition and if it were gone it would look like she was leaning against the side of the photograph. I like the portrait, the distant look in her eyes makes me want to know the story behind them. Link to comment
julianj1 0 Posted July 17, 2008 Personally I wouldn't crop, as the cocked head against the vertical frame it is an integral part of the expression; it gives it a sense of that teenage "yeah, yeah, whatever". The asymmetry of the face caught my eye: the left side has a slight smile and a bright, happy eye, and a slightly raised eyebrow, but if you cover that up the right hand side has a very different look and tells a different, perhaps darker story. I think that this duality might be one of the reasons why this image is so intriguing to look at and why it has such 'depth'. It's a fantastic a very subtle portrait. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted July 17, 2008 This is cropped way too tightly, it's disturbing (and not in a good way). Sorry. Link to comment
amir49 0 Posted July 17, 2008 its a very ordinary portrait i think and there is nothing strange in it ..there is a very mute eye contact in it and the colors are so much muted too , the color of the hair helped the face of the model to be so much pale ..the photo has much cropped and theres nothing in background . but the model is beautiful .4/4 Link to comment
Tom Wiggins Photography 0 Posted July 18, 2008 The skin tones are so real, I waiting for her to say what she is thinking. Link to comment
fires1664882843 0 Posted July 18, 2008 Lovely model: her eyes speak to you (loneliness) good capturing. Link to comment
weddings1 0 Posted July 18, 2008 This image is alluring to me in the snese that I get lost in the repetative patterns of the hair esp. against the bark but the composition always brings me back to the eyes. Interesting tight crop but it doenst work against the image. Link to comment
dianadeaver 0 Posted July 18, 2008 Wonderful image...stunning...I too find myself staring at it. One of the most striking successes is the range of textures (tree, lips, hair) and colors (red, green, orange, blue)...all very well balanced. There's an incredible depth in her look. It gives the impression there is a deep and strong connection between model and photographer, allltogther comfortable. Link to comment
phoenixphotography 0 Posted July 18, 2008 Very impressive, Personally I would have slapped it into photoshop and desaturated the color of the tree slightly, But in all a fantastic photo Link to comment
jerry_white5 0 Posted July 18, 2008 I don't know but it appears that the image is just a bit blue to me. I adjusted the WB in lightroom and on my monitor it looks much better. Other than that, it's a wonderful shot. Link to comment
martin_schiff 0 Posted July 18, 2008 This is a wonderful portrait. The eyes, the hair, the lack of makeup give it a wonderful fresh feeling. Link to comment
wmhoodphoto 0 Posted July 18, 2008 This photo works for me because of the stark contrast between her stunning blue, right eye with catch light and her red (actually orange) dreadlocks. I believe that most people would view someone with dreads as mavericks or nonconforming individuals or dope-smokers...as in Rastafari. But that right eye, which draws me in, tells me that this young lady is secure in her beliefs and confortable within her own skin. (However...she may be just a model with a wig! :) Great lighting and exposure, too. Link to comment
fotodaniella 0 Posted July 18, 2008 An excellent natural portrait with a wonderful look in the eyes. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted July 18, 2008 Is this about the girl, or the photo? Not to be the naysayer, but so many of these positive comments are regarding the *subject*, not the photograph - i.e. "she's so mysterious, ambiguous, what's her story", etc... That's all well and good, but I would think a "Photograph of the Week" would be one that focuses on effective photography (technique, composition, styling, etc), of which choice of subject only plays a small part. Last time I checked, this was Photo.net, not Model.net. I shoot headshots, so I view 100+ portraits a day... To be frank, there is little that sets this one apart. The lighting is blotchy and uneven, one of her eyes is partially obscured by shadow and hair, her lips are dry and pursed awkwardly, her eyes are flat and bored without spark or excitement, the tree is crooked and awkwardly intruding on the frame, and that gummy yellow elastic is the brightest thing on the shot, competing directly with her eyes which should be the focus. Apologies if this sounds nit-picky, but it's how I assess the quality of every image, especially my own. As an image creator, these are all points the photographer should have worked harder to notice and correct as part of his job. Let it be said that "interesting" shots are not necessarily "good" - especially for commercial purposes. As a headshot, this wouldn't fly. We can see nothing of the girl's personality or form beyond her funky hair. As a stock image, it'd need a lot more treatment to work as anything more than a random portrait (to my eye: punch the colours, push the contrast, boost the exposure on the face to even out the light, dodge the shadows, and bring out the eyes, and despite her obviously fresh features, do some basic spot retouching and blemish removal). As a Flickr post by a "serious amateur", it'd surely score a spot in the "RED-HED-DREDS!!!!" pool, but would pass by my viewer without much further note. It's a technically OK executed shot, but I don't see a story here. I see a tightly cropped floating head of a pretty girl. She may be a doll, but brilliant this is not. A pretty/interesting face alone is not a story. What we have here is a pretty good starting point that any photographer should be pulling off their camera on a regular basis if they call themselves a pro. Good work on setting the standard. andrewg_ny 3 Posted July 18, 2008 I started reading through these comments, surprised at how just how positive all of them were, mostly commenting only on the more-interesting-than-average subject rather than the photograph. I think the composition is just fine. I'm not one who normally likes the hypersaturation and excessive contrast that we see so much of these days but my first thought is that this one seems to need *slight* exposure, black-point, contrast and saturation boosts, going especially gentle on the reds. Looking again however, maybe it does have something as is--the cool, grey skin almost makes her look slightly like she's made of wax, there's a certain interest there. Perhaps it is treading a very fine line as it was shot in rather flat lighting. Link to comment
Stock-Photos 1 Posted July 18, 2008 The model's unique beauty contributes more to this being a great photo, than any other single factor, in my opinion. Link to comment
bluyckx 0 Posted July 18, 2008 a little bit soft especially around the eyes also maybe a little more colour contrast (vibrance) and watch out for those reds and magentas on the right side (maybe a little desaturation there?) otherwise a very very very excellent picture Link to comment
gene_jordan1 0 Posted July 18, 2008 I think most of the replies on here are far too negative and lacking in personality. It's not "Photoshop'd photo of the week" folks. It's photograph of the week. If a photograph needs that much work from a computer, why not just start in Illustrator with some drawing. Some of you need to get over yourselves and just let the rest of us enjoy a wonderful photograph for the artwork that is is. I personally love the photograph and think the artist - photographer has done a great job composing it. Link to comment
nirlep 0 Posted July 19, 2008 This image goes beyond the "picturesque". The eyes pierce. The washed out tone of the face is enigmatic. The richness of this image is its "as isness". You photoshop it and kill everything; the time and the distance it packs as well as riddles told by her locks. Link to comment
sharonw 0 Posted July 19, 2008 This photograph is spectacular. The many contrasts in the image...this child (she appears to be a child, to me) is so beautiful and innocent, and then the hair is a contradiction to the beautiful face. I see no sorrow in her eyes, very peaceful. another contrast..peaceful and yet disruption..an 'in your face' aspect of her appearance. Just spectacular. I could gaze at this beautiful image for hours. The soft colors are mesmerizing... A Mona Lisa, for sure. More compelling than the Mona Lisa. Link to comment
andy m 0 Posted July 19, 2008 Don't like it. There's nothing special about the shot itself, just a tight portrait, poorly color balanced with the autofocus locked on to the hair instead of the eyes. As far as the model herself, nasty dreadlocks and a blue face don't do anything for me. Link to comment
lola_gunch 0 Posted July 19, 2008 I think this is one awesome model, however the dreads and the face just clash, would like to see auburn hair in a natural cascade with a little more sharpness so as not to loose that complexion. Link to comment
eclecticbuzzard 0 Posted July 19, 2008 Nice and natural. Some people would have been tempted to touch it up with Photoshop. Better left alone. Link to comment
