anthonyd 0 Posted May 6, 2007 This is great Matt. A little blown out on the highlight but still great. He looks so wise and as if he's about to tell a story! -Anthony Link to comment
Matt Laur 2,201 Posted May 6, 2007 Thanks, all. This shot was taken in between some action work in the field, so I had the camera cranked up to a higher ISO and a very high shutter speed... sometimes you just can't reconfigure the camera for a more portrait-ish situation quick enough to still capture what comes along (like this) out of context. I metered off the dog's eye, and the blown-out highlights were a necessary evil, under the circumstances. The good news: the owner still bought some enlargements from the series, so THOSE are the highlights, as it turns out! Link to comment
darius.tulbure 0 Posted August 28, 2007 Browsing your portfolio I can see you are an animal lover. I especially love cats, however that's not important. This photo is more like a portrait than a "pet shot". He looks like an old man whispering words under his mustaches thinking about his youth. I like it, even though you could have done a better exposure control. About the forum thread I've recently posted, well I was critiqued for every word I've spelled. I know the quality threshold has lowered, no question about it. The way I've approached the problem was wrong though. Sorry for my grammar and communication skills. I'm not a native English speaker; I do what I can. As for the "anywayz" thing, I think was nothing to discuss about it. Waz just a word which I intentionally misspelled. I do that a lot, but that doesn't mean anything. What was truly upsetting was that almost each of you attacked me, personally, even though I made a general remark. Not a diplomatic one. You even gave me "grades" and categorized me.No one here really knows me. Link to comment
Matt Laur 2,201 Posted September 2, 2007 Thank you, Darius, for choosing this particular image for a comment. I agree that it's far more an anthropomorphized portrait than it is a simple dog shot. The lighting that day was extremely difficult, especially for a snow-white dog which I was shooting in hard sun in between action shots. You're definitely correct about the exposure. Given the subject's interest, I wish I'd had the time for more care. As for your other remarks: I think you're mistaking a rebuttal against your own rather barbed comments with a personal attack. When someone posts a rather scathing dismissal of the work of an entire group of people - even if it wasn't entirely intentional - it's reasonable to expect some heated responses pointing out what seems to be some hypocrisy. I certainly was being sarcastic. You've certainly (in that thread) straightened out any misunderstanding about your wider perspective. I'm sure we'd ALL rather talk about specific photos and techniques than about the ups and downs of photo.net culture. Speaking of culture, I do commend you for the effort it takes to participate here in a language that is not your native tongue. I would be TERRIBLE at this in your language, I'm sure! Link to comment
kirk d 0 Posted May 5, 2008 Fantastic image! Animals rarely get captured with such respect and personality. This looks like a wise old man thinking about things that have been and are yet to come. Very good! Kirk Link to comment
