After I posted my last comment, I realized you also took the Norther Cardinal picture posted the other day. In the details of both pictures, it lists that flash is used. What does that do for you? I'm thinking you ar too far away to matter, or is that something you did not update?

I'm using a 580 flash head on a Wimberly flash arm with a Better Beamer flash extender. The birds in the two pictures are well within the range of the flash. In both cases i used the flash as fill with the flash set at -2/3 to -1 1/3. This softens hash shadows.
