susan stone 0 Posted April 26, 2007 Last Fall I started, and didn't follow through on, a series of images from the "Smalltown" where I live, this is another photo from that presentation. And what category fits this subject; it could be an urban Landscape, it has cars and vehicles in it, it's a documentation of a small town.....your thoughts and comments appreciated. Link to comment
steve lamplugh 0 Posted April 26, 2007 Hi Susan. I love this. I look forward to the series! Link to comment
susan stone 0 Posted April 26, 2007 Last year I posted a couple other images from my "Smalltown" series but now I've got to get busy and shoot and edit some more because I'm moving out to the ranch where I'll be working. Link to comment
juan-de-santa-anna 0 Posted April 26, 2007 Wow....this jumped off my monitor! I thought the place was on fire...great composition and the color and tone is magnificent! I am glad you left all the upper sky in the image...cropping it down would take away from the complimentary color scheem (sp?) you have going on here...!Juan Link to comment
bosshogg 4 Posted April 27, 2007 You are getting to be awesome. I'm not a big sunrise/sunset fan, but when you combine it with other "mitigating" content, I can get pretty excited. This is just super. The way the light raps around and envelopes all the other objects is otherworldly. And some of my favorite subject to boot. This is it girl. If I had one nit to pick, I would like to see a little more to the left for balance. The frame is a bit close to the trailer. Link to comment
dave_dube 10 Posted April 28, 2007 Agree with D.M. about the cropping to the viewers left.My thought is that your telling this story with emphasis, I would want 60% clouds/sun-whatever and 40% homestead. From the contrast and saturation of your photo, it appears flipped. Again, that's only my opinion. You have terrific balance in your photo, the trees, antenna, clouds and your crop are all vertical but, you've visually planted them to a strong horizontal foundation of the house, metal objects and the yard. Well done! DavePS ~ I answered your LR question. Link to comment
lynne ross 0 Posted April 29, 2007 A really interesting photo - the sky looks like it is on fire! The colours are so vibrant and I love the contrast of the red/smoky clouds and the blue of the background sky. Very well done. Lynne Link to comment
susan stone 0 Posted April 29, 2007 Funny story about this image, I was trying to take a SUNRISE photo (no tripod and low light of course) and I just wasn't "seeing" what I wanted so I turned around to leave and there it was right behind me, this shot was taken facing WEST! The sunrise was reflecting on all those clouds and objects right behind me and I wasn't even aware of it until I turned around and it only lasted for literally seconds.....one must look, look, and look some more. This is a full frame picture, if I had backed off a little it would have diminished the vehicles and house too much.....Dave doesn't it sorta look like the sky is about 60% and the objects about 40%?! And thanks Dave for the LR answer, I'm tempted. I'm at my house in town today to mow the lawn but I've moved out to the ranch where I'm now working, I won't have online service out there for another week or so and my phone here is being shut off tomorrow so Adios for a bit good friends. katzpjs 50 Posted April 30, 2007 Ehh... another typical Montana sunrise. The kind they always have when I'm not there! 8~(# Link to comment
jeverz 0 Posted May 6, 2007 Hello Susan; I think this photo is beautiful, the colors of the sky, and the cars together. (well, probably not good english....) Link to comment
susan stone 0 Posted May 8, 2007 Thanks Ellen for taking the time to comment, your English totally captured the essence of the image. Of course I boosted the color a bit and then forgot to sharpen the image. Well Shawn one must get up EARLY to see this kind of a sunrise.....I thought it'd be the old junkers that caught your eye. sky blue 0 Posted May 14, 2007 Are you sure that's not Texas? Oh yea, the cabin. Good documentary photo. By the way, congrats on your torn shingle photo; I saw it in a catalog and it still looks great. ~Sky Link to comment
susan stone 0 Posted May 19, 2007 Nope it's not Texas and the sky does look like it's on fire....or at least reflecting one. Another of my "shoot from the hip" shots, no tripod, wasn't set to RAW and I was using one of thoes "auto" modes, this is one of those images that could of been so much better if I'd had the time to plan it. lbattjes 0 Posted May 19, 2007 Sometimes the best shots are those we can't plan! :) I love this shot, Susan! Definitely looks like something's on fire. Very eye-catching even from the thumb. Normally I would think we'd see a shot like this as a landscape-style, but I'm so glad you shot this vertically so that we could see all of that beautiful sky. Plus, the shape of the clouds form a bit of a triangle with the home as its base and it leads us up through the image. Very nice capture...so glad you turned around! :) Leslie Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted May 20, 2007 Ah yes, those small town photos...:) This place would fit right in where I live. Glad you turned around...beautiful! Link to comment
susan stone 0 Posted May 21, 2007 I love the character of a smalltown, it seems to attract the flotsam and jetsam of humanity and all their accouterments. Link to comment
timkeller 0 Posted May 21, 2008 Well, on the one year anniversary of this picture's last comment, I'm here to say what a gem it is. The sky makes it (that light blue up high!!!), but the typical modern homestead makes it interesting with its melange of vehicles, debris, and antenna. Oh, and that light blue! Link to comment
