My four-year-old doesn't stop moving that often (unless he's

sleeping) but here I managed to catch him in a peaceful, quiet

moment. I'm considering using this one in a portfolio for admission

to the Art Institute of Boston. Any help is greatly appreciated... I

don't know any photographers, so the internet is my only mentor...

thanks,

Aurore

To be perfectly honest, I only started shooting recently, and the rule of thirds is quite new to me (I shot for quite a while with no knowledge of this rule). However, I feel the centering works in this photo, with the lighting being the appeal of the photo as I see it. The ring of light falling around him and highlighting the top of his head was what made me like this photo. I hope I don't sound defensive... just wanted to perhaps draw your eye to one part of the photo you might have missed... but thank you for the criticism, although perhaps it would be more useful if you could suggest ways that the photo could be improved, to help me along in my photographic pursuit?

I found this photo from your link on About.com's message boards. Ican see what you like about this film. The tones are nice. I do have a comment about how you could improve this photo though. I don't have any trouble with the child being in the middle of the photo, like the previous comment, what I feel is missing is the relationship between the boy and the other figure in the photo. I don't think you necessarily have to show the boy's face, though it would be nice to see some of it, but since there are two figures in the photo, there needs to be more implied about their relationship as far as the photo goes. I'm not sure what they are doing in this photo right now. One thing I have found, when photographing people especially, that is what makes the photo. I think technically the photo is good. You could probably have a bit more texture in the grass, but I do love the light from the sun on his head.

Hope this helps. I'd love to see more, and try out that film myself.

I don't mind seeing this subject centered, especially with the bright grass in a circle around him. I agree with Daria that the second person seems a bit extraneous, at least that's how I see it. The pose of your child, with back to the camera and sitting on legs feels isolated. The other person's legs throws that feeling off. imo
