the lighting of the face and hands is great and the pose is adorable, but there needs to be some delineation to separate her hair from the heavily textured background. a more direct light would cast a defining shadow, but how to do it while maintaining the soft lighting of the skin?

I suggest you ignore the criticism that was made of this photo. It seems to me that you know exactly what you are doing and the effect you want.
