Randy, these birds are very tough to exposure properly. On my monitor the whites are overexposed. When I'm photographing these birds in harsh light (it appears the light was rather harsh when this was taken) I purposefully error on the side of slightly underexposing rather than over exposing... It's almost impossible to bring out natural looking detail in overexposed highlights, however underexposed highlights can be fixed and made to look excellent... If you'd like to see an example of what I'm talking about just let me know!

Joshua, I appreciate your feedback. You are right about the difficulty of properly exposing the snowy egret. However if you look at the histogram of this partucular image you can see that it is not overexposed. There is a nice curve at the high end of the tonal range and no blowouts(Feel free to copy into Photoshop and view histogram for yourself). This is a very white bird and I have exposed it accordingly. Maybe it is your monitor -- I calibrate mine monthly with a ColorVision Spyder2 colorimiter. I am not trying to be overly defensive here, but the reason I posted this particular image is because I was pleased with the exposure of this difficult to expose subject. Don't take me wrong here...I really do appreciate your feedback. Most people(myself included)don't often enough take the time to leave helpful feedback. In this case, I just happen to disagree with your assesment. Cheers - Randy

Joshua, I appreciate your follow up comment. I really wasn't trying to be defensive as I have received much helpful feedback from photo.net patrons. I think it is great not only that you took the time to leave constructive feedback, but you also went a step further and offered your assistance. - Randy (not sure why my comment is posting before yours, I wrote this at 2:00 p.m. Eastern - must be a time zone thing)

Randy, as I stated in my previous post "on my monitor" it appeared to be over exposed. I was just giving an honest assessment of what I saw. When I look at it on my monitor at work (which has been calibrated) I now see that indeed it is not overexposed.
