To Rob, Lesa, Gunga Jim, Julian and Vallery - thank you all very much for your generous comments I do appreciate them. I wasn't too sure how this one would be received but I had a liking for it myself and it seems others do too. Thanks again and all the best for 2007, Neil

B&W works so well for this shot, and I love how the horses legs seem to be fanned out evenly across the bottom of the picture. A flurry of motion below & frozen action above!

Well panned Neil. The sharpness is impressive and the shot puts you into the centre of the action. Happy New Year to you & yours.

I think this is the perfect shutter speed, just the right combination of sharpness and movement. I can hear the pounding hoofs, fabulous work!

Thanks very much for your kind comments Jarek. This was taken at a country track not far from where I live. It was what we call a picnic meeting . The horses are not of a high standard and prize money is about US$350 a race. Nevertheless, the action is just as intense as at the city meetings.

I spent most of the meeting shooting slow shutter speed pans. This was the best of them. I was lucky to get four horses abreast with Silver Cat at full stretch. And at 1/100sec, I managed to get a good balance of sharpness in jockeys and horse bodies and blur in legs and background/forground. It was a very bright sunny day and contrast was bad the colour version of this photo, so I turned it into black and white which softened the effect somewhat. Glad you like the photo Jarek. Kind regards, Neil

Thanks very much for your kind comments. I'm glad you like the photo. I do a lot of this slow shutter speed panning at the races but seldom get anything that I'm happy with. I think there is a lot of luck involved in this type of shot as well as technique. Thanks again. All the best, Neil
