The local festive calendar in Bilbao ends on December 21 with the

festival of Santo Tomás (Saint Thomas) or Santo Tomás

market, prelude to the long-awaited Christmas holidays. The best

turkeys, capons, fruit and vegetables from the baserris (farmhouses)

of Vizcaya are displayed on more than 300 stalls set up between El

Arenal and Plaza Nueva. If it is your first visit to this fair, don't

leave without first having tried a talo with savoury sausage

accompanied by a good glass of txakoli. Talo is a flat corncake or

maize omelette made with flour water and salt which is wrapped around

a piece of hot chorizo sausage and txakoli is a popular white wine of

the Basque Country. In this photo you can see a partial aspect of the

fair with the church of San Nicolás (Saint Nicholas) at the

bottom and a placard of solidarity with the prisoners of the Basque

independentistas.

Saludos y Feliz 2007!!
