Beautiful photograph. The use of DOF is so effective here. I really like how the background rock echoes the one in front in form. The light is also perfect. Nice textures and details too. Well-done!

If you looked for this result in your experiment but you have a really nice, contrasting picture with a great use of DOF. I supposed you use the DOF mode in the Canon camera....

Thanks, everybody! The exercise was to open the lens up as far as the shutter speed allowed (1000 in my case), focus the camera at it's closest setting, then shoot things that demonstrate narrow depth of field. I didn't need the DOF preview because the aperture was wide open during the exposure.

 

There's a guy in Venice who balances these rocks every morning. It's like a beautiful, ever changing, spontaneous folk art exhibit. I've got a couple other images of it in my folder, and will probably shoot it some more as he changes things. BTW, he calls them "Angels."
