John Peri 1,032 Posted March 2, 2007 I agree, but beoynd the technical qualities, there is the personality and charm captured of the model. After all, that is what portraiture is all about. Great shot Ken, bravo. Can you tell us what lens you used here? Link to comment
ken_thalheimer 3,739 Posted March 2, 2007 Thanks for your words John. Yes, the lens was a Tamron 28-200 used at 100mm @f8. The original was in color of a D100. Converted in the red channel (which I find the most flattering for portraits)tweaked in channel mixer for the toning. Light was a single umbrella Link to comment
steve_lowther 0 Posted March 17, 2007 This undoubtedly will become an heirloom. Using broad light (shadow side of the face away from the camera) is a difficult thing to do, but I think you have used it successfully here. Most portraits have a static feel, but personality is conveyed by breaking some rules here, ie, shooting with the chin up. The tilt of the head works very well, relieving the viewer of the boredom of too many verticals. It gives a nice diagonal flow which helps nearly any composition. Anymore I just stay away from broad light in favor of short light (shadow side towards the camera.) It generally conveys more depth and can be more "slimming" if the model needs it. The image is in key without any of the foreground or background being blown into pure white. That is a rarity even among established professionals. I wonder, Ken, if you might be placing the lights a bit far away from the subject? You get the softest, wrap-around light when the lights are closest to the subject, even to the point where you have to fight keeping them out of the image. Just wanted to know I really value your input, always commenting about strenghts and weaknesses. I hope I can do the same for you. Link to comment
