tylerwind 0 Posted October 9, 2006 I liked the golden tone on everything in this picture, unique clouds, and the distinct suntrail on the water. I would greatly appreciate your thoughts and comments. Thanks for viewing my work! Link to comment

tylerwind 0 Posted October 10, 2006 Thanks to everyone for the kind comments and also for the complimentary ratings! I need some reinforcement every now and then. One thing I've come to realize is that I'm either good at taking pictures or really lucky and usually don't realize it. What I mean by that is every time I put up a picture and think "this is going to be a top pics shot" it ends up with a 3.72 rating. BUT, some pictures, like this one, that I just throw up and expect to get 4's and a few 5's and I really pull some big numbers! Maybe I take good shots and just don't realize the good ones or maybe I just get lucky and get a good picture when I'm just playing around--I don't know! Anyway, thanks for all the comments and kind marks. I was searching top photos to find my shot this morning and didn't even see it because IT WAS ON THE FIRST PAGE!!! I've never done that before! :) It feels pretty good though. And, that is, of course, based on anonymous ratings alone, which are considerably lower than the in person ratings. Thanks again--you guys are great and after getting many of my shots rated low with no comments, it's nice to know that even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then. :) Link to comment
Landrum Kelly 64 Posted October 14, 2006 Nice shot, Tyler. The composition isn't perfect, but it is good, and in addition you have some very nice backlighting--always a challenge in terms of exposure. I also like the big clouds building in the distance, probably out near the Gulf Stream since this was obviously shot early, when most thunderstorms over land have usually collapsed. I am assuming that this you shot this from James Island at low tide. Very nicely done. --Lannie Link to comment
tylerwind 0 Posted October 15, 2006 Lannie--Just for my own education, what would you suggest for a better composition? You said it wasn't "perfect"--I know that is very subjective but what did you have in mind just to give me some other ideas? Thanks a lot for your comments--I really appreciate them! This was shot from James Island, although it wasn't low tide! If you get up really, really early you can hike through the trails, maybe get your shoes a tad bit wet, and walk all the way around so the sun rises behind the lighthouse. It's probably about 3/4 miles and takes about 30 minutes to get there but if you get a good day it's worth it. Thanks again for stopping by and offering your advice--I appreciate it! Link to comment
Landrum Kelly 64 Posted October 15, 2006 Thanks for the note, Tyler, on where you took this from. I have walked around the other way and all the way out to Ft. Sumter at low tide, but I do not know if that is possible now, thirty years later. Channels may be dredged, but inlets and harbor entrances are notorious for shoaling conditions and deposition of sand and mud. (It was all sand out to Ft. Sumter when I did that during the Christmas break of 1976.) At high tide, Morris Island light used to be standing in the water. Is that still the case? As for the composition, I think that you have done the very best that you possibly could, given the cloud structure. You have set the lighthouse off to the side, which is good, and you have had to place the horizon in the middle to get the clouds and water. Some would argue against putting the horizon right in the middle, but I don't see that you had any choice. As for the clouds, they did cooperate to the extent of giving you that very dramatic emergence of the sun. A more ideal sky might have included more substantial clouds to the left, rather than the fractured cumulus that has almost outrun its thermal foundation. This is all to say that any defects that the composition might have are the result of forces over which you have no control. I like the picture, Tyler. I am sorry if my original critique sounded so negative. --Lannie Link to comment
tylerwind 0 Posted October 16, 2006 Aivar--Thanks for the comment! I appreciate it! Lannie--You did not come across as negative at all! I appreciate the feedback and seeing that I enjoy your shots so much am ALWAYS interested in learning how you would have done things differently. I did notice the centered horizon here--I have a shot with just about every composition I could think of (I think I shot like 100 pictures back to back). I liked this one because it showed the clouds but also captured the "sun trail" and lighthouse reflection on the water, which I hadn't shown in my previous posts. So, it was a bit different. I appreciate the feedback and agree completely--please always let me know whenever you have an idea for improving or even just changing a shot. I know I have plenty of room for improvement and even if I did shoot a perfect shot, I would like to hear ideas on how I can create equally good but different compositions/exposures of the same subject.
