I don't know what to say about this, except that I like it, and I am curious about how it was done.

This is VERY good. The more I look at it, the more meaning I derive out of this shot. Great work!

Brilliant ! Really, extremely impressive... Just a small detail to justify 9 (and not 10) in aesthetics...: the separation line between the tiles is a bit too textured, and therefore a bit too strong in my opinion. It still looks fantastic, despite this little thing... I'm just trying hard to find something to complain about in such an amazing piece...:-)

Is this a composite? The shadows on the wooden frame seem to be deeper than the shadows on the frog.

How can I forget this photo?!! Congratulations Yannis! This shot of yours changed my life! I am absolutely inspired when I first saw this shot. Keep up the out standing work!

I like the idea very much, but the framing, I think, could stand some refinement. I've posted an amendment which maintains all that the original has, but eliminates some of the extraneous parts. I've also burned in the woman's shoulder, on the left.

 

The frog's lighting is from below and intense, the woman's from above and very diffuse, so here again, the idea is superior to the execution.

Re Doug's comment, it appears to me that the lighting on the frog is from the right.

I'm sorry but what in the world would impel you to choose this image? The woman looks like she's nodding off with her head plastered to a pebbled glass window-- but clearly she is not because the position would be damned uncomfortable, so this is a posed shot-- while a frog is sitting placidly on the other side. Why? Is this an ironic post-modern play on Symbolism? Is this some sort of undergraduate homage to Magritte? The whole shot reeks of the unfortunately all too prevalent "I think I'll be arty and strive for some undefined mysterious mood" school of impressionistic college freshman photography. The colors are nice, the framing is nice, the focus is nice, etc., but as a "concept" this one is a complete dud. You were duped.

Dave is right, the light is from the right. I was mistaken.

Well, I won't slam it like a kochanowski did, but I have to agree that the image isn't really working for me. I don't sense any real connection between the frog and the girl -- it simply looks like they've been positioned to face in each other's direction. I'm not sure the wood strips are anything but a distraction, either.

This one really stands out in the crowd.

Although it's an interesting subject the composition just doesn't work for me. I think the photographer has much stronger work in her folders. I'm bothered by the bright sharply focused frog on the diffuse background. I'm also bothered when photographers don't mention Photoshop composites under technical details. It's the old old saw of photographic integrity. I know I'm going to be sorry I brought this subject up. I enjoy PhotoShop composites and just think the photographer should acknowledge the technique. Its no different than listing the film medium and lens used.

Folks, it is "picture of the week", not the "best shot we've ever seen". How about evaluating the shot itself here, and take the "why is this one POW" to the forums, where that kind of discussion belongs.

 

For my tastes, this is good. I'd have cropped a little off the top and right, but not nearly as much as Doug did. The light on the woman is from the left, on the frog it is from the right. In the real world, you wouldn't expect interior and exterior lighting to be like that, but it is slightly distracting in this shot.

 

I also find myself wondering if this is a composite in PS. But either way, it is worthy.

 

As to its being posed, well, isn't almost anything shot in a studio posed? Doesn't make it a bad photo, just means its posed. We don't have so much as a caption to determine the intent of the photographer.
