There's something within this shot that doesn't quite work for me compositionally. I'm trying to figure out what it is... I'm thinking that the arch should extend to the top of the frame and perhaps the background should be thrown out of focus... it's a bit too busy, but there's something else that I can't quite put my finger on. I'll think about it and edit my comment when I realize what it is.

Ok... I think I got it. The mountains on the right side of the arch lead the eye away from the image. The arch doesn't serve as a frame within this composition. I think that cropping so that the arch extends to the top of the frame and cropping the mountains to the right will force the viewer's eye to stay within the frame of the image.

The colors are amazing and the winter air that allows the mountains in the background to be seen so clearly really makes this shot grab you. It makes me want to take a deep breath and smell the crisp desert air.

This is a real place - we should see it the way nature made it. Context is important here. Ernest has done a wonderful job of situating this arch in its real-life landscape. Like one astute comment says you can imagine breathing in that crisp, clear winter air because of this acute image. The arch beautifully frames one of the snowy peaks and the brilliant rock in the foreground which would be lost in your crop is an essential part of the composition. With due respect to your opinion, IMO your suggestion would totally destroy this fantastic shot. One of the best images I've seen here Ernest.

Great lace, great time of year, great light, and great perspective.

I agree with all of the above positive statements as well.

Morey, I updated the scan, this one looks more like the actual slide. What you're refering too is probably the difference in contrast between my arches' E100VS and your arches' Velvia, E100VS is less saturated but the red color is alot richer I think (Velvia is better in the blues) ... These are both excellent rendition of the arch, yours was taken a bit earlier (you can see the different angle in the shadow) and the front of your arch is almost a silouette, mine was taken at exact peek and the sky was clear on the horizon, in the end both interesting different shots of the same subject taken about a week apart :)

If anyone cares to compare here is a link to Morey's excellent photo.

The more I look at this photograph the more I appreciate it. How is the shadow side of the arch so well lighted? Is there another object reflecting the sunlight back? This is really quite amazing. It doesn't look like it could be real. Its almost glowing. I'd love to see this place some day. Note to self: Change vacation plans to visit SW.
