One look and it reminds me of Magritte. This is a great shot and there is much to ponder. Love it in B&W as well.

good job

:-) I like it. It's like the final screenshot of a movie that just ended and in some seconds the ending titles will appear. Music ? Something with accordeon or anything with acoustic guitar or blues, waltz... It makes me think many things.

WELL well done!!!

This image has been selected for discussion. It is not necessarily the "best"

about photography. Visitors have browsed the gallery, found a few striking images and want to know things like why is it

a good picture, why does it work? Or, indeed, why doesn't it work, or how could it be improved? Try to answer such

Wonderful B&W - - 7/'7. Regardless of the rating, I love the resemblance this photo has to "classic" films of the 40s

and 50s, shot in B&W of course. Indeed, the hat the subject is wearing immediately reminded me of detective films

from that era. Your contrasts are quite effective, and you did a great job capturing the gorgeous pattern in the sky.

I would be happy to offer constructive criticism, but I have none. I think the photograph needs no improvements.

Congratulations!

I love this photo.

The black & white really made it look even better!

It shows sadness & remorse, if you ask me!

Maybe a better name than "Eugene..." next time.

Outstanding piece of work - full marks - absolutely fascinated with the concept and aspect. Reminds me of something very similar I have seen in a classical painting somewhere but can't put my finger on it ?

Again Congratulations.

Fantastic one. The first thing that strikes me is that it has the exact quantity of objects / interesting elements without being too spacious or too cluttered. The texture of the sky is wonderful; the sea in the lower third classical, and the composition on the right side brings the required interest. The back of the man is massive to contrast the subtle details of the surrounding. Though a non-moving figure, the slight forward tilt of the shoulders suggests action. Even the light on his hat is very nice. Congratulation to Denis. Many of his other posts are also equally amazing.

This photograph does not inspire me. It's not that it's poorly executed or lacking in technical proficiency, it just looks

like a derivative snap-shot by someone who knew what they were doing. I like the toning of the image, it looks like

there has been a little burning on the right side of the photograph which adds drama to what would otherwise have

been even less intriguing. The asymmetry around the subject's ears is distracting, as well.

On the positive side, if you haven't already, I implore you to view this artists gallery because it shows that he is truly

capable of beauty in almost every photograph. I was very impressed. The use of light, tone, and composition

reminds me of Uelsmann, without the dark room manipulation.

Well, any picture MUST convey the message the author had in mind for us. I understand that this man is troubled hence the clouds above, head pointing down, black and white tones increasing the contrast, making its message clearer.

Well, the two "vapor trails" (contrails) from aircraft ruin it for me. They are not only distracting, but they also take away the "timeless" quality. Once I noticed them, I simply could not fully enjoy the photo again. Otherwise, it is an interesting photo, although a bit cluttered, in my opinion.

There's a lot to ponder in this photo. It's very well done, leaving much to your imagination. Those 2 vapor trails in the sky ruin the mood & aesthetics of it for me. They seem to intrude into a story of another time. They bisect the frame harshly

detail at the right ear attracts my attention to that extend that spoils the other impressions which come, because I keep thinking what it is all about?

Inspector Maigret, with an enormous cigar is coming into my mind... I do like very much this picture, I am not disturbed at all by what I did hear before, but I am not so good to talk about technical details, for me it is just perfect, GREAT scene, interesting, like Ken T did say, a lot to ponder

I agree with the previous posters, that Denis has number of very good images in his portfolio.

As the title of my own post suggests, the "smoke" - trail - was also for me a key element, that I noticed immediately, but... I loved it! Coming from another time indeed ! Bisecting the frame indeed ! But that's part of the reasons why I loved it at first sight. To me, the larger trail is the story in this picture. "Old Man with a plane trail on his hat" or "Man with trail" would be the kind of caption I'd imagine for this image. Ok, admittedly, the smaller trail in the top left corner is a bit of a distraction, because the larger trail carries the weight it should, whereas the small one competes with it someone. So I suspect I'd have cloned the smaller trail off, if this picture was mine, but well, I am hoping I won't be the only one who finds the opposition between man and trail is in fact both very original and madly interesting: that's precisely where my own imagination restarts traveling, after visiting the background. The question, all the way, when viewing ths, was: what's he doing ? What is he thinking - smoke coming out from the hat suggests he's thinking, for me? What is he looking at? How old is he ? Did planes already cross the sky when he was younger?

And I found so many possible explanations to this strange but brilliant composition... It's a wide open door for the viewer's mind... Open to... somewhere... What's on the right side looks pretty old - and dying... Is this man perhaps dying to...? Can this trail perhaps be seen as some sort of symbol of his next journey, or his past journeys, or......? This is such a rich image, with so many possible interpretations. It also very well composed, clever, and to me, fun and nostalgic at the same time... And... I really love the light !

Half a suggestion, maybe...:-) I do see details in the shirt, on my monitor, but I also see Denis muted his whites quite drastically all over this image: I think he might have gone a little too far on this output cursor. I wouldn't mind a little more contrast basically - just a bit. It would only make the picture stronger and the amazing gradient on the hat (among other things) more realistic and more pleasant to view.

Overall, I'm a fan of your work, Denis. And I used to be a fan of your kind of low opacity layer blurring as well, but no more. I think you should trust your images a little more: they are truly worth something, and need nothing more fancy than what they are. You know how to create a mood and how to tell a poetic story; you need no blurrings and no tricks to communicate with us - I think. K.I.S. - Keep it simple. :-) Congrats on this very interesting photo.
